Ah, now we are getting into the nub of the matter. It is, of course, impossible to compare taxation from one country to another - or, in parts of the world, one state to another - unless you compute all taxation, both direct and indirect.

I have a feeling, simmo, that your 44% may be understating it somewhat.

Brian - How about Cheltenham car park before racing at one of the days of the Paddy Power meeting for the Champers? I'm happy to share your winnings with any other forumites who might turn up
Big Howard might not be pleased if he gets to know you eased my passage.

You and Brian going to do car parking, Diver? That's a good job: don't forget your Hi-Viz vest and take a packet of sarnies, because you won't get any breaks. But it's short hours, so you can pop off after the third, usually, to watch the rest of the racing.

Very probably - I was just looking at direct and obvious taxes - I don't drive, so no road tax for me unless you include the contribution I make indirectly through my bus fare. Personally I would reckon an average of about 50% would be more accurate for the general population.

The problem for me is not so much the amount of money collected - it is the way it is (mis)used which gets on my tit end. There should be plenty there to provide a decent level of public services of all sorts - but whilst councils, hospitals, police stations etc continue to be populated by workshy thieves and run by idiots we will receive none of this - just a bleating cry of "we need more money".

Simmo, I receive the single person discount and am in band B too. I pay £780 per year.

Brian - Howard just brings a tear to the eye - that's how big.
Krizon - We are into dogging my dear - race tracks, car parks, you name it! Do you have a list of venues we could use?

What do you think would happen if a large percentage of motorists switched to a cleaner fuel vehicle?

What would happen is that they would soon find themselves no longer excempt from paying the charge, after all it is supposed to be a Congestion charge, and all cars cause congestion.
