Dublin

Many guide books are pretty decent (always rated Time out the best) these days

Rough Guide also very good. Found Time Out exceptional in Istanbul bit it was dire in another city I went to (can't remember where).

Tend to use Wikitravel more these days for sights/things to do and take a punt with restaurants/bars. Trip Advisor is a waste of absolute time.

Yes. But overall point is fair . Quite a few tourists do make it out to Richmond and Hampstead say, but would they venture Dulwich, Camberwell and Peckham triangle? They certainly should....

To get back to original thread - I'm from Cork but have only been to Dublin a handful of times (apart from Dublin zoo when very young). I have always found it to be a pretty great city (I am very unpatriotic), village-like in its feel, but with a lot to do - National Gallery, IFI, Stephens Green, Phoenix Park, Wicklow and Howth nearby. It suffers like the rest of Ireland with regard to its architecture, but that and possibly wanting to buy a house one day (very expensive all things considered), I think it's a pretty good city, maybe better for locals than tourists.

Obviously West/South West of Ireland is much more beautiful (as has been said) but people for some reason go to Dublin all of the time.

I agree about Tripadvisor for everything bar hotels (and it is not great for that, either).

What is wrong with a guide boo, Hamm? I travel a lot to Eastern Europe, and I would not have been able to appreciate my trips as much without one.

In fact, I change my Rough Guide to Ireland every two or three years, as I find it indispensable when holidaying in Ireland with my family.

Guide books and good, and more than often necessary. It's when people walk around reading out of them walking down the street is when they become a bit too much. They are best used as a guide (get it?) and not as something to follow by numbers.

Dulwich is unqiue and the gallery is special but Peckham Rye park is a gem and Peckham itself is extraordinary. Like a huge heaving bazaar

The hidden squares and architecture of Camberwell are quite something too

Great cycle route
