Ahern forgets all the moments that led to a moment of madness.
Brad got involved with Brian Wright which was the biggest mistake of his life but he had a choice and could have walked away at anytime but those Moments on offer were too hard to resist and he paid the price in the end.
I don't know what enticements drew Ahern into the web but it had to be more than what he could have expected to make out of stopping the odd horse.
Whatever it was he had a choice to walk away from it and didn't take it so Moment of Madness is no excuse. If you fly with the crows you get shot with the crows simple as.
What get's me is why on earth did those involved think they'd get away with it? Betfair is like the CIA FBI and the British SS all rolled into one. If you fart in the wrong direction they will report you without hesitation. They have computers that spot unusual betting patterns in an instant and when there reputation and the future of exchanges are on the line no one is above the law.
I met Brad on several occasion and he was always a bit of a lad to say the least as were many of the jockeys riding at that time. Brad just went crazy on it and was banned for 8 years. He had his ban reduced to 5 years so I suppose Ahern, who's an even bigger idiot for getting involved in this technological era might well have his reduced to about 6 or 7 years.
Greg Wood's take on this story. Particularly interesting is his claim that Ahern's "Betfair Eddie" nickname was coined by fellow-jockeys rather than punters.
