Only just noticed this thread.
Glad to aftertime I had 12/1 Gaye (sic) Brief and no one tried to tell me to back Ekbalco, not that I'd have listened, especially to Jonjo O'Neill (jockeys are better at riding horses than reading form books).
I liked Ekbalco and the exaggerated waiting tactics from David Goulding were entertaining.
He came from a different Surrey postal district in the Imperial Cup, yet still arguably hit the front too soon, but it didn't stop him winning going away.
I'll never forget the old Schweppes where he came from even further back,
"Magnificently produced by David Goulding," Peter O'Sullevan called it - my friend Nigel Culbert, bookmaker and pro punter, disagreed: "Magnificently produced? He gave it a pitting FURLONG to make up - no wonder Donegal Prince ran him out of it at the end."
But racing would be dull if every horse and rider were always conventional.
Ekbalco wasn't quite top class in the way the Golden Era (he came at the end of it) hurdlers were, but he's better remembered than some horses who were better than him - and rightly so.
