Its in the EBN and we received this a bit later:

"Catrin & John James,

Unfortunately Ela-Mana-Mou had to be put down last Wednesday as he went down in his paddock and couldn’t get up. Everyone at Airlie will of course miss him as he has been around for so long but he had a long life and enjoyed his last few years of retirement at Simmonstown. Thank you for your interest in Ela.

Regards,

Brendan Diamond."

Rest in peace old boy.

As some will know on here, we went to see him every time we´ve been to ireland in the last 3 years. Its the End of an era, as simple as that. He had this sign on box saying "Champion 4-year-old in England 1980" - how wonderful and unbelieveable is that. We took Grey - was it last year? - and when we told his trainer we are about to see Mou, he acutally said " where is he then, is he stuffed?" - How many horses -or better, commerical sires - are allowed to live that long nowaday??
And we can truely say he was looked after in best possible way at Simmonstown. Its been a privilege to have known the old boy!

Sad news, but like Gareth says what an age and great that he was looked after so well for such a long time!

I'm gutted even though his death was not unexpected. He was very special to me, so special in fact that at one time years ago I got nicknamed Mou because I followed so many of his offspring. They made me plenty of profit too!

He was a gorgeous racehorse, and even in old age had a wonderful presence. He had a very kind eye, and was affectionate but like most of the good ones he knew he was special. Dick Hern adored him and believed that he would have been even better as a racehorse had he not suffered with his feet on firm ground and jarred his back as a 3 year old.

Without him there would have been no Double Trigger, and he was the horse who made me get up off the sofa and go racing.

He seemed to stamp a lot of his offspring, and even though Trigger looks nothing like him, his full brother Double Eclipse does. Many of Trigger's offspring look like Mou.

It's a sad thing that he is gone, especially as were going over to see him later his summer, but as Crazy says what a fabulous life he had and so great to know he was loved and cared for all of those years.

Also grand that he bowed out this year with another Grp 1 winner at Royal Ascot as broodmare sire.

It was great to go and see the old boy last year. He was still proud as anything and was in no doubt he was still the boss. A magnificent creature even at that age.

Many of Double Trigger's offspring look like, well, Double Trigger!! He's a sire who tends to stamp most of his progeny with his own stand out characteristics.

We'll just have to disagree on this one then! Many DTs stand out from a mile off - even if they are bay, or even grey, a lot tend to take after him in one way or another. Mine is so close to DT it's spooky and I had to be restrained not to buy another doppelganger at Doncaster a couple of days ago. We have a DT mare though who looks nothing like him - or Ela Mana Mou either - she takes after the damside, her mother being a Strong Gale.
