A good few years ago I was mulling over whether to buy an excellent painting I came across. It was a little too expensive and I didn't have a house to put it in !! so i let it go. Anyway turns out it was by Peter Curling and is probably worth about 10 times what it was worth than. I was at an antiques fair on Sunday and saw another piece by him. Not his best, but still very good and it was priced at 7k.

Does anyone know of any artist who can capture the thoroughbred as well as Curling can without the fancy price tag ? The walls are a bit bare around here.

I always loved this girls work although how much she sells as opposed to just commission I am not sure. I do know that Sheikh Mo and co have stuff by her. Quite a few years ago when my mum retired from being the loyal hunt secretary they rang me to ask what would be a suitable present and I suggested a pastel portrait of her horse. It is quite breathtaking. She has totally captured the horse's character and my mum was so bowled over she burst into tears.

You could of course try the Dents who exhibit at Cheltenham/Chepstow - their work is definitely going up in value. I first met them years ago as they were based in m y home town of Chepstow. I have an small early original pastel bought for £35 now worth according to them in the region of £800 - £1000.

They are really nice guys - I think they still own Green Green Dodgepot (sorry Desert) in his retirement - lovely paintings of him.

The Dents are great and definitely worth patronising! Iconoclasts and horsemen through and through... I chatted for a long time to one of them in their tent at Lambourn Open Day - David I think - a few years ago; he couldn't stop talking about his horse! I seem to remember some very tempting paintings of the Velka Pardubice... another passion of theirs!

I think the print on the cover page by Peter Smith is one of the most gorgeous I came across in a long time - David (not Dent) had the Original on display a couple of month ago, really stunning.

But I too love Peter Curling and have a few at home, incl. Final Intructions, his second version of The Head Lad, wonderful.

Like Susan Crawford, and her print of Pilsudski, and her Hawk Wing ("Washing Down") are real classics, if not everybody is soo keen on these horses.

David Dent it a Legend, and a friend. Very exentric and a bit tired of horses at mo so does nude women and fur coats (!) and stuff, but great horse pictures, always worth a buy.

yep we are still here and think you'll find our site worth a look

yes jinnyj....your pastel has indeed ecalated in value and would defy anyone to find anything that has escalated that much in value since the 80s.
Curling... brilliant artist...his works have escalated even more of course.

I sometimes wonder about the cultual vacuum we currently live in where people look at things like stocks and shares and property as investments; and well you cant blame anyone but yourselves for gambling on and putting your faith in things that have little cultural value.

What would you rather have; a piece of aztec art that has come down through the centuries or an aztec dwellng now dust. Or perhaps some shares in an aztec business.
you didnt see panzer tank strapped up with semi detached bungalows in the thirties did you...no; paintings.

We are in a recession; its as bad as we have ever known and its going to get a lot worse. its nothing to do with the world economy and everything to do with a chancellor I would not have in charge of a racecourse trade stand for ten minutes and yet the public have trusted him to run the economy; and he is now bailing out the swines that have caused it...banks...with our money. Time to get your money out of stocks and shares and property and put into in things you can at last enjoy; paintings; haute couture; jewellery whatever. Or you can go to Bristol or London and look up at the great and dreadful office buildings and try to work out what your pension and savings plans and share portfolios have been wasted on.
I'd say you have done alright with your investment in my painting jinnyj; shame you didnt get the curling too.

Seems to be the way people are investing now alright.

I don't think Gordon Brown would put up much of a fight if everyone began investing in stuff they enjoyed either...

he should make owning horses and buying art or tickets for the ballet etc and couture fashion tax deductable; get rid of tax on cigarettes; no road tax for any new car produced in the uk, raise tax massively on all petro chemical clothing, products and junk food and everything else imported from china and the usa; and charge everyone who watches soap operas big brother and the x factor a quid for the privilige every time. He should also raise tax significantly to 99.9 per cent on the earnings of jeremy kyle and Jonathan Ross Paul mcCartney [backdated] and Davina mcCall.

We would have the best economy in the world within a month and a far better quality of life.
cutting vat a smidgeon is like sticking a plaster on cancer.

Has this company got a stall at Newmarket because I reconise some pictures from Juddmonte day, especially the front page painting which I am sure was going for £11,000.

Are you wanting to commission something? Or just buy a painting? And what sort of budget?

I have a friend who is based in Wexford who is brilliant (can’t remember where you are?) He’s a bit more than 400 quid (possibly double) but his paintings imo are just stunning. He did a lovely pastel of Captain CeeBee a few years ago and has also done Un Temps Per Tous for David Pipe. He works in both oils and pastels. www.oliverellwood.com and have a look through his gallery. Mainly commissions. He used to ride a bit as an amateur and won The Military Gold Cup for the Queen Mother. Really nice guy.

Too photographic in her style for me. Good but I like a painting to look like a painting not a photograph.
