As a non driver its something that I have never thought about but I have known about photocard licenses only being valid for 10yrs, I am quite surprised by the amount of drivers who do not know this

To check yours, look at the photocard & to the right you will see 4b & a date next to it, this is your expiry date

And yes it currently cost £17.50 to renew it!

Am I correct in thinking that it is only the new style of photo license that runs out? They were made compulsory in 1998 I believe, I just managed to hang on to a paper when I moved about that time.

I think so, I can see why they do have an expiry date as someone can change rather dramaticly in 10yrs let alone 20!

It's a big con.

For mant years I went without coz Swansea lost my old one, but one day my luck ran out.
I got told,to poduce I went to court explaned that Swansea lost it so they let me off but told me I had to sort it out I paid for photo Ifilled out the forms sent them off and they lost them as well:mad:

It's a form of tax you have to have it when you go abroad.

Reading this again, I haven't made my meaning clear. Before 1998 you could choose whether to have a paper license or a photo card. Either of these would run out on your 70th birthday, but when they made it compulsory for all new issues to be photo cards they introduced the 10 year rule.
I agree with Andy, it's just another "stealth tax".

If you were thinking of doing your LGV.(HGV) You need to hurry as after September you will need to get the CPC first what a con that is. as well.
