Fancy A Day At The Zoo!

A third giraffe, Paddy, died this morning. He was the baby giraffes Daddy and didn't recover from the smoke inhalation he suffered during the fire. Very sad news.

My Dad phoned me with this news, knowing that I had been to the zoo to see the mum and baby. This is extremely sad and Paddy was the last of the giraffes. Kizi and Paddy had been together for a few years. I have heard that he had not eaten or drank since the fire and collapsed this morning.

Definitely he's pined to death, poor darling. How absolutely tragic, after all their problems trying to get a baby giraffe, now the whole little family is dead. I imagine their keeper's in a terrible state - you look after these lovely creatures for years, and lose the lot in a few days under awful circumstances.

Paignton Zoo look for new Giraffes..........The latest from BBC Devon homepgae..................

The zoo said it had put feelers out to institutions across Europe and that it hoped to be in a position to work on a breeding programme soon.

The zoo said it had been in contact with a number of similar institutions across Europe.

Mammal Curator Neil Bemmont said they hoped they would be in a position to start breeding their own giraffes sooner rather than later.

Staff devastated

Staff said they received "heart-warming" support from zoos and individuals from around the world.

Messages came as far afield as Germany, Israel and the US offering their support after the tragedy.

The zoo said staff were devastated by the loss but are determined to rebuild the herd.

Paignton Zoo aren't having much luck at the moment. On the BBC site it says that a maintenance worker who was fixing a fence got bitten on the hand by a lion yesterday!

Another visit to the zoo, camera practise you know.. ;) The weather was fantastic and most of the animals were sunbathing.
I visited the area where the giraffes were housed. As I went through the building the smell of smoke was still apparent. Very sad seeing the giraffe pen empty. Their tall feeders as high as trees , but empty. :(

Anyway here we go, sunbathers and babies.
Not an ugly duckling..............

Dims, fanflippintastic! I am bats about tapirs - there's an excellent American site dedicated to them, and it surprised me to find out that there are several types of the species. What an adorrrrrable baby - look at that daintily-placed little toe! You are marvellous at getting the poses: not sure what kind of primate that is lounging louchely, but the caption's perfect, and the baboons! Superb stuff. YOU HAVE GOT TO GO PRO, GIRL!

Is there any chance I could purchase a largeish copy of the tapir, please? I'd love to have him/her framed. No, don't offer it to me for free - I want to pay for it! By the way, baby panda Su Lin has been amusing me over at San Diego Zoo this evening - she's up in the treetops, twiddling around with some rather slender-looking branches and having a great time. :)

Thank you An.

Krizon, i need to go back to the zoo and get some more pics of the tapir. That one i posted is quite a long shot and he/she was a little shy. Mum and Dad were so careful around it and both did a job in giving it a lick all over. The gorillas are way off too, which is a pain as they are fascinating to watch.
I bought one of those yearly passes so I can go back as much as I like. Extremely good value.
I need to check how long a tapir keeps it spots and stripes.

The other thing is those monkeys, I cannot find out anything on the net or in my books and the Paignton Zoo website does not have them down in their list of species. I want to go back and get the name.

One thing i did learn yesterday is about a bird called a Hamerkop. This bird is fascinating. It builds the biggest nest a bird can make and plops it on the top of a tree. It looks like a house. It has a roof and other birds usually nest on top of that! The entrance to the nest is via a small tunnel.
Here they are...

.........and still no mention of the cacti!!

Great site! They are a fascinating bird - I saw them when we went on leaves, travelling down from Zambia to the Cape. Unusual, imposing, and yet a bit of a giggle!
