Yes but if you don't want to eat meant on grounds of personal morality but like the taste of it why should you not eat vegetarian alternatives ?
 
I didn't say people shouldn't eat it, I just find it completely nonsensical and don't see the point of it myself.
 
I thought if 'Mozarella' wasn't made from buffalo milk, it couldn't be called 'Mozarella', in the same way that 'sherry' has to be from Jerez.

Ardross, you're being obtuse and missing the point. I specifically mentioned veggies who steer clear of meat products on grounds of ethics, not taste or dietary need. If I ETHICALLY detested the meat trade and its products, why the heck would I want to bring home vegetable-based items labelled 'bacon', 'sausages', 'lamb flavour', 'beef flavour' and so on? Why do companies persist in producing stuff with a significant nod towards an industry which millions of vegetarians worldwide find abhorrent?

I know you aren't entirely qualified to answer this since you eat fish and, quite possibly, eggs or chicken, so you enjoy munching certain species. No-one says ethical vegetarians shouldn't eat smoked tofu, but why is the stuff so often referred to as 'barbecue beef-flavour tofu', 'cheese', etc., and why does the promotional blurb often reference things like 'ham flavour'? I mention 'cheese' as vegans will abhor all animal products on the (ethical) grounds that animals have to be killed in order to obtain continuity of supply.
 
No I don't eat chicken and I disagree that I am being obtuse . I don't see any inherent contradiction between not wanted to eat meat on moral grounds but liking the taste of it and enjoying foods that try to mimic it . People's tastebuds may not accord with their conscience . No animals die in a veggie burger .

Personally , I have never really enjoyed such foods .
 
By the way.
around 100 years ago,when i was at school.I was once told that a lot of the older pupils had a once a weeko ritual where they would get together and harvest lots of different cheeses in the school toilets.

They never shared and it is rumoured that boys of a certain religion were not able to produce any.

Through more boredom than curiosity, I did a little Googling. Mozarella has not been protected. What they are trying to protect is Mozzarella di Bufala Campagna, which, up until summer 2004, had not been agreed by the World Trade Organisation, though I think it had within the EU. Maybe it has by now.

Due to the shortage of Water Buffalos, and the high demand for Mozzarella, most of it is made from Cow's milk. Not all the cow's milk stuff is bad, but if you get the Buffalo milk one, it is a safer option.
 
I love cheese, but my favs are probs a mega strong and mature cheddar or that cheese with the chilli's in.
 
I find some of the milder and softer cheeses almost addictive.

A good Cheshire or Brie or Camembert has me sniffing about the fridge for hours on end like a fresher chasing his Nat King at a Saturday night Uni disco.

Some of the stronger cheeses just blow my head off but they need right kind of liquid accompaniment.

Face it, Colin, you just wimped out of saying anything, didn't you? <_< I can't stand Brie, Camembert, Stilton, St Augur, Gorgonzola, Danish Blue, or any of the endless list of blues and smellies, but you deny the cheeses their right to breathe and sweat a bit when you bung them in the fridge. And then they deny you the best possible texture and flavour. Best place is a proper cheese larder, which wafts in enough natural air to keep the cheese for a long, long time, but failing that, then under a terra-cotta keeper in a cool place, but not a fridge.
 
Ah, I'd nearly forgotten about that stuff - I like the Mexicana cheese, or any other with chillies in. Anything with chillies in actually, now you come to mention it! I bought a lovely mature cheddar with chili flakes from a market in Barnstable a couple of years ago - needless to say it didn't last long!
 
Have you tried sex with chillies, Shadow? Or sex with cheese, or cheese and chillies? I think we should try to amalgamate more of these random threads, to keep the board tidier...

Erm....I can't say I have, Jon - must be leading a very sheltered life.....(mind you, any sex is hard enough to come by right now..... :lol: :cry: )

I have to agree with Ardross on this . When I was veggie it was a moral thing for me (my principles have lapsed shockingly :P ) It doesn't mean that I did'n't like meat and as long as the substitute is cruelty free I don't see any hypocrisy in that . If you're brought up with certain foods you're bound to have an attachment to certain tastes as well . Just cause your a veggie not every meal has to be bean pie , dal , baked potatoes or salad. Why can you not have Shepherdless Pie too :P
However , I don't know it you're a veggie on moral grounds Ardross but most people wouldn't describe someone who eats fish as a vegetarian . :unsure:
