No, Brian, I haven't seen all of the contenders. I've seen The Shining, FMJ, Lolita (or bits of it - I fell asleep), Dr Strangelove (very good in its time), and A Clockwork Orange (also good in its time, very inventive, blah, blah), and yes, of what I've seen, I prefer Space Odyssey. I'm not sure that I saw Eyes Wide Shut - might have, mightn't have.

I didn't realize that it was mandatory for pollsters to have seen every film Kubrick made, possibly five times over, to form an opinion based on the offerings. Several thousand people didn't see all of RED RUM's or BEST MATE's races, either, yet they still became the most popular chasers of their time. What does one have to do - turn into Mark bleedin' Kermode in order to be allowed to voice an opinion?

FULL METAL JACKET was among the best of a plethera of War movies released between 1984 and 1995.

CLOCKWORK ORANGE became more popular after it was banned.

In fact:

THE DEER HUNTER
FULL METAL JACKET
PLATOON

were all decent movies and made plenty on the Video circuit.

You said you were suprised that 2001 didn`t pull in ALL the votes.
Then someone said FMJ...no contest.

The reason i posted the poll was that it is a tough choice, Kubrick made in the main great films and although i dont think there are a lot of film buffs on here, i was interested to see what film would come out ahead.

Euronymous.
i was lucky enough to have several thousand video films during the period 1984-1995.

I owned a few Video Outlets in Germany.(catering for the USAF & ARMY)

Euro - the sarcasm was aimed at Brian, not you. I had assumed one could vote for the film of those listed that one had appreciated the most, which I did. I didn't know I had to be a bleedin' encyclopedia of all of Kubrick's films to be allowed to enter.

I see what you're getting at - yes, I'll amend that, then. 'I'm surprised that more people didn't vote for Space Odyssey, which I thought was blah, blah, blah... ' :D

I was surprised, too, by how many people thought that snore of inflated over-emoting, FMJ, was their favourite Kubrick film. Mind you, the title does say 'favourite' and not 'best', which is, of course, Space Odyssey... :P

I recommend "Paths Of Glory" if you get the chance to see it. It may be one of the two best anti-war film ever made, it's certainly one of the two best I've seen. It's set in World war I, was made in 1957 and, as Gareth says, was banned in France for eighteen years because they thought it showed their high command in a bad light. Which it did, and the book on which it was based is said to have been loosely based on a true story.

The incidents that are related were at the time of the Battle of Verdun, which, coincidentally, is featured in the other great classic anti-war film, Renoir's "La Grande Illusion" (also highly recommended).

At Court this week, I picked up a copy of the BBC's 'History' magazine and, while it's fairly bite-size stuff, there was decent enough article on Haigh, which is clearly, now, revisionist. It looks as if he was, in the diaries which he kept (and not the bowdlerised versions his wife published), far from happy about many of Britain's allies, finding Joffre et al arrogant and stupid.

I'd consider watching it if it appears, Brian, though I usually burst into tears at the sight of any old 'over the top' footage, knowing what an appalling fate awaited most of the men filmed, and the tragic effect on the living they left behind. There's nothing redeemable about that war, as far as I can see.

Only two lengths between the field ? I have Eyes Wide Shut as pulled up at halfway
Why? I enjoyed the film a great deal...even though Cruise was in it. Indeed, he put up a great performance.

Side note - I read in The Times yesterday that Beck and Isaac Hayes are both Scientologists like Mr Cruise :o :o
