Feral Cats......

And just in time to save me a fiver too!!
But I also feel that if you did buy SL a dustbin it may infact be the last present you ever have the opportunity to give her. It needs careful consideration.

So bin bags as a birthday present to complement it would be a bad plan too?
Akin to signing your own death warrant I should've thought.

You are sooo right, Griffin!!!!

Besides, I ain't getting no dustbin - it's not needed!!! Two or three times a week I put out a small, tightly wrapped bin liner! Besides, they're strict & if I stuck a dustbin out the front of my flat they (the management, or reps of) would remove it. We all have small cupboards outside our flats with our eater/electric meters in & if we store anything in there it is removed!

Shadz: "two or three times a week I put out a small, tightly-wrapped bin liner... " yeah, okay, that's the three empty voddie bottles taken care of, but what about the veg peelings? :D

  We know, we know, darling - it's to hide the shame of them not being local Vino Verdinasti, isn't it?

Or do what some creep did in my neighbour a little under 18 months ago, baited fish with shattered glass and had some poor cat eat it. Of course the animal died from its insides being torn apart, and bleeding internally. It was a total disgrace, and I hope I never see a sight like it again, because if I do, I swear I will physically kill the person whom did it, for such a shameful act of cruelty.
We never did find the culprit, which is a good and bad thing, good because he would have seriously never lived a day to tell the tale of his cruel act, and a bad thing, because everyone wanted that thing behind bars for what they did. Whoever they were.

And then a couple of years back, an American pitbull killed a poor cat sitting out on the front patio sleeping happily in the sun. That dog was never found either.

As for cats, am not a fan myself. But I'd never wish anything bad upon them. I just don't find them loveable enough, and have had several bad experiences with them, when I was scratched by one on the face in the dead of the night at a friend's place, that I was staying at. It was locked outside the room, despite its persistent meows. And when my poor dog, whom at the time was a pup almost lost an eye to a cat, that sniped at it. Despite the fact the cat was on our property and our dog, an 8 week old pup was eating her breakfast.

Laws here in our area now make it illegal for cats to be out at night, and have to have collars with a minimum of two bells to warn the native animals, especially when there are echidnas, bilbys and rare breeds of spinifex hopping mice in our local area.
On top of that cats must be desexed.

Dom, why don't you get a squirt gun, and if you see the cat spray it with that. Fill it with water and add a couple of drops of lemon citrus. You will find the cats won't like citrus (most animals hate it), and will remember your place as the place where they get squirted with water/lemon.

What are bilbys, GA? All Australian animals sound cute - wombat, numbat, koala, and so on. Not heard of a bilby - anyone got a piccy of one handy?

I like wombats, think they are sweet - but when one snuffled onto our terrace (I'm sure it was a wombat, the ol' memory is a wee bit rusty!) in Cairns, my Australian friend & her mother shrank away saying they can be vicious - I went towards it, cooing about how cute it was!!!

As for the spraying them idea, that's not so bad - but the little buggers usually leave it until around 2-3am to start!!

A bit like the Clangers, the old bilbies...

They must've been based on them! Ooohhhh.... I WANT one! Absolutely adorable. I bet the little nose flexes, too - I am just mad about animals with flexi-noses, like tapirs, who if I were terribly rich, I'd have roaming my vast estate. I love the bilby! (Mind you, like the marvellous duck-billed platypus, it's another animal which looks like it was assembled by committee!)

They are about the size of a dwarf rabbit. i had the wonderful pleasure of holding one last April, very soft, and had two layers of fur, the top was wiry, and the bottom part was soft. They are very gorgeous creatures, its a shame what feral cats and dogs have done to them, as they are on the list of being endangered, and I would not be surprised if they become extinct within the next 15 to 20 years.
That is not an assumption I make lightly either.

And Dom, yeah I guess that would be the bad thing about spraying the cats with water. Another idea, spray lemon citrus around your property.

Oh, poor little mites, GA - they sound adorable. I guess that's why Oz has the 'indoors' policy on cats at night - to protect its tinier wildlife? BTW, we get a lot of Steve Irwin's wildlife programmes over here, and they're always good fun. A couple of nights back it showed him and his small team, very ably assisted by village men, capturing a monster croc which had been terrorizing villagers in Vanuatu. It was huge, but they managed to get it bundled up in canvas, then transport it by two boat and one plane ride to around 1000 km away, releasing it into an ideal spot where another croc was known to live. The villagers were so delighted to get the safety to use their pools and rivers back - the croc, even though encased in its canvas, was powerful enough to squirm and knock over nine of the 12 men carrying it! - so they hadn't dared to swim, or go riverside. When Steve was finally releasing it, it went into a series of death rolls at great speed - he just managed to free its mouth from the last pieces of rope, and away it went.

Steve and his group were treated with the most fantastic display of hospitality by the islanders. They were garlanded, treated to a ceremonial dance and feast, and then he was honoured with a special spear, reserved only for heroes, which to the islanders he clearly was. The countryside was absolutely breathtaking. Have you visited?
