Festival Memories

My best and worse memories are both financial related!!

My best was Burrough Hill Lad`s GC win. I`d backed it @ 33/1 after seeing a very bullish interview with Jenny Pitman after it had won the Welsh National.

My worst, believe it or not, was Desert Orchid`s Gold Cup win. My dear late Dad had 2 big priced winners (one @ 66/1) and was waiting on Yahoo for the last leg of 3 doubles and a treble. He`d have won a life changing sum if Yahoo had won! Watching the youtube replay earlier I still can`t believe if got beat!!

I was on Yahoo at 100/1 that day too. Looked like the only one likely to act in the ground and could back Dessie in it. Cheered both up the hill.

Many memories
Master Turn winning the County big bet 6/1 and making the festival

Most Pleasure: Sprinter Sacre last year - watching with a good mate from the turf need the finish, had come to conclusion that probably wouldn't win, though had backed him after his win at Cheltenham earlier in the season. Leaping around like a loony as he came up the hill, pure joy

Loser that hurt: Kauto's last GC - hurt because of what might have been if he hadn't had that fall in the yard in the build up - but a bitter sweet moment because of the warm reaction of the crowd when he was pulled up.

Best bet that lost: Cotton Mill in the Neptune, looked nailed on then lurched off

First winner: Tiutchev, Arkle 2000

Best Memory: Kauto's first Gold Cup, as was there with both my brothers, the mate who got me interested in Cheltenham in the first place, and his Dad who went with us every year until he sadly died a couple of years ago. We were all on Kauto, but also Katchit which won the Triumph like a little rocket up the hill.

Festival Winner that gave you the most pleasure: Rock on Ruby's Champion Hurdle

Festival Loser that hurt the most: Maljimar (does not help that the winner ride was one of the best and all my mates plus 95% of the Centaur were on him)

Best Bet that Lost: Harbour Pilot at 33-1 for the 2004 Gold Cup without Best Mate. How the feck did he not hold on...

First Winner: I think it was Young Hustler in the 1993 RSA

Best Memory: 4 way Dead heat between Sprinter Sacre last year, Best Mates 3rd Gold Cup, Kautos 2nd and Istabraq's 3rd champion hurdle

Festival Winner that gave you the most pleasure: Sprinter Sacre

Festival Loser that hurt the most: Kauto Star V Denman

Best Bet that Lost Binocular when AP made a **** of it against Punjabi

First Winner: Persian War Champion Hurdle

Best Memory: I have 2.... 1st visit to the course I was taken there by Donal Nolan his brother Major put us all up in the Queens treated like king..........got in free, went with 80 quid came back with a 4 figure sum. Meeting was abandoned and cards rearranged lost races like the Cathcart Cup and Grand Annual that year. 1st bet on the tote a place Aldaniti came up then winner after winner Comedy of Errors, Royal Epic got 40/1 and 33/1, Brown Lad Quick Reply (Harry Bell's) Ten Up win Bula ew Then to top it all Any Turnel told us he was switching from Cuckolder to Jim Joel's Somerville in the Mildmay ..by memory I got 12/1 of some unsuspecting bookie before the switch was known and he went off at 4/1 winning in a common canter. Not one losing bet at the meeting.

The second one was a crazy William Hill Jackpot 6 bet 22.40 stake per line 5p or 2.5p can't remember which......Anyone who remembers these betting slip will know you got great bonuses after the first 4 races and you could put early prices on. I started of with Solar Cloud David Nicholson's first ever Cheltenham winner as a trainer with Scu up. I got 40/1 about him in the Triumph other winners were Charter Party RSA Dawn Run Gold Cup, some horse begins with "A" Jobroke Easterby's big gamble from 12/1 to 7/2 all going on to Western Sunset and Half Free in the last race.........Western Sunset passed them all jumped the last in front and I am in for about 85K but Half Free wins and I only I get 14,300 quid approx...what a shame
