I watched an old vid of him winning the Sun Alliance and Dunwoody hugging him for ages in the winners afterwards.

I looked back over his record and what a horse he was.....one of the greats.

I remember being at Cheltenham when he won his bumper.

Never won a Gold Cup but so what: he won everything else and he did run into Looks Like Trouble and Best Mate

Fantastic horse in a good era too.

Never did quite stay the 3m2f and the fall at Leopardstown did seem to affect him as he was liable to throw in a sketchy round every now and again. When he got it right, he was a great animal. Never got credit for the King George win. McCoy being blamed for Best Mate's defeat seemed to be the accepted story.

The perfect example of how you can be a legend without winning a certain race in March

I was there that day too. Was over the moon when he won the KG [and one of Simon Holts best commentaries]. Are there many horses that go straight to chasing from bumpers?

The ill-fated Missed That took the same route for the same connections, moehat.

As the first really top horse WPM had I felt (rightly or wrongly) that WPM was slightly in awe of the horse and treated him with kid gloves.
Running him in the handicap against Amberleigh House at Leopardstown was as near "hardship" as the horse got to toughen him up.
I wonder if WPM had him now would he be raced/trained differently ?
Any thoughts ?
