Food Fads ...

I will try both but i am going to cheat with the top one & use Waitrose fresh custard as I'm sure it will work (& save a hell of a lot of bother!)

I have to admit I always thought an ice cream maker was an indulgence - Songsheet's recipes make me wonder otherwise .

have you ever made a ginger ice cream ? Or if I remember rightly do you not like ginger ?

What exacly does an ice-cream maker do? Is it not the same as putting it in the freezer?
(obviously not, or there would be no such thing as an ice-cream maker)

Ah, well, it's very scientific, you see. You cannot simply make your ice cream mixture and then bung it in the freezer and leave it to freeze - if you do so it will freeze unevenly and be full of icy crystals. An ice cream maker churns it as it freezes, thereby distributing the ice and voila! a lovely smooth ice cream.

Regrettably, mine is a pain in the arse to use as it doesn't have a freezer unit, you have to "feed" it with a mix of ice and salt around the ice cream container ...

I do (I'm told!) a very fair whisky and ginger i/c, James - I like fresh ginger but not too keen on dried. I use ginger in syrup for that flavour.

If you do like ice creams and sorbets, you'll definitely get your money's worth out of an integral freezer unit. As Muttley points out, unless you 'half-freeze' the ice cream, take it out and beat the shit out of it before returning to complete freezing, you'll get a mix that's full of lumps.

Mine's a Gelato Chef - pretty ancient by today's standards but still works just fine!

I bought mine when Giles was quite little and it was damn useful having supplies in the freezer for him and his chums!

Not much bother making egg custards but agree that using the Waitrose version is a v good idea!!! :P

I find it reassuring that there are still women out there with domestic science skills.
Not here there isn't!!!!

Mmmm.....you might have cottoned onto a good thing there, Ardross!!!

I don't really eat much ice cream, I do tend to keep a box of Calippos in the freezer though as they are very refreshing when it's so hot. My favourite ice cream would have to be Haagen-Dazs' Strawberry Cheesecake though, mmmmm... :D

Arrggh - food fads!!!

Over the past two weeks, I have lived mostly on pitta bread. Don't ask me why - I bought a pack a couple of weeks ago & I seem to have forgotten how much I like them. I've eaten some of them with fillings but I'm very partial to sticking one under the grill for a minute each side then eating it on it's own, with salt, for lunch-tea-breakfast-whatever!!! I'm halfway through my 3rd pack in less than 2 weeks....

Before that, I was eating noodles/stirfry every day for dinner - I go through phases when I eat the same food all the time!!

Good, I'm obviously not alone, then!

My current fad is houmous either on pitta or Somerfields' really rather excellent rustique rolls - which always puts a smirk on my face .............

And my current fads are:

The new Jaffa cakes with red berry filling
Waitrose wholemeal bread with oats & mixed grains
Gin - lots of it.

Seriously hope I don't fall into your diagnosis, Brian, especially as my recent Tarot reading said exactly that! (so far it has been alarmingly accurate - the Chariot card appeared - "you will experience major problems with your car/transport" - a week later the brakes went on my car!).

I have to pick a small argument with your signature line, jinnyj: wind also blows lots of hot sparks about randomly, which often burst into flame, starting up whole new fires which sometimes rage out of control, and make the initial fire look a bit dull by contrast. If you take my meaning. :D

Ah, but the guy who quoted it was something else!

He was a French aristo who was exiled from the French court for gossiping. So to gain revenge on those that expelled him, he proceeded to paint murals around his chateau (which is quite beautiful), continuing the line of gossip. Hugely entertaining & well worth recommending - Ardross take note - it is in the Burgundy region, so a visit on your next vino trip is advised!

But I thought the French court thrived on nothing BUT gossip? Oh, and cake, of course!

Oddly enough, the old girl and I were discussing how boring British houses are, compared to the beautifully-decorated ones in Bavaria, for example. She recounted a trip she took with my father many years ago, where the entire fable of Red Riding Hood was painted in murals all around a house. There were dozens of others with other lovely murals painted on them. It would certainly cheer up many a dreary old terrace if people painted flowers, jungles and animals, or the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet, on their facades.

"Mrs Jones's house? Oh, yes, just go past the elephant stampede, turn left at the galleon, and she's the Sistine Chapel on the right. Can't miss it."

You'll find my gaff pretty boring then Jon - it's white walls & marble flooring throughout for me!!! I quite like it though.....

Nope, Jules - you're certainly not the only one! Safeways are seeling some really good pitta breads at the moment, from a bakery in Leicester or somewhere similar - they're very good ones!

I like those red berry Jaffa cakes too - they're great! Why do the bastards have to package them in a double sized box though???

I can only laugh at your theory LordH - I'm either the Madonna reincarnated, or I'm 7 months gone.....neither very likely!!! Kirsty, do you reckon you could strap a babby to your back for going up the gallops???!!!!!

Dom - you should have seen Brian's face when I announced that little pearler! I turned round and he was out the door!

They obviously never visited the North of Ireland then - though I'm not sure about the word "beautiful"...

No, and she never did get to Cork to see the land of her fathers, either. And it's too late now, though I still hope to make it before I'm 94.

Class - I can just see him now!!!

Going back to the food theme

The Waitrose custard DOES work in the ice cream recipe. I thought as I'd bought the vanilla custard it may mask the other flavours but once churned & frozen settles down well. So it cuts the time making ice cream to minutes.
