George Best - RIP

A great player no doubt. For me though....and i hate the nostalgia monkeys who think sportsmen and horses aren`t as good as they used to be.......the thing about the modern great players is that they have it easy in terms of being protected by the laws of the games. Zinane has never had to play at the top level against really physical dirty players. That part of the game, and overcoming it is lost forever probably.

No-one can say he didn't get a send-off fit for a king this morning. What a ceremony! The singing of 'Bring Him Home' was beautiful, and thankfully the short bit I watched wasn't awash with maudlin deification. (No doubt that happened this evening, after everyone in town got stuck into their 'tribute' drinks!)

I was a bit annoyed that a fair bit of my TV licence money went on covering this so extensively.

I think you are right Maurice. The B.B.C. should be spending money on the REAL issues like Deadenders, Strictly cum dancing, It's a knockout and Eldorado!!!!! :brows:

TRB, there's a lot about the Beeb I don't like and you'll be pleased to know I've never seen an episode of Eastenders. They at least had the sense to pull the plug on El Dorado.

However, they do some things extremely well. Their overall sports coverage tends to be very good, for example, and their drama projects like Bleak House are often excellent.

Where I'm prepared to allow the BBC some leeway in the GB funeral is my belief that the powers that be in Stormont wanted a state funeral for their own political ends: to showcase the province putting its differences to one side for a weekend, and that the BBC, along with the other networks, were more or less obliged to give it maximum coverage.

In the meantime, you keep taking the irony tablets. One of these days you'll be funny.

Maradona is comfortably the best player I have ever seen. I am only 27 years of age.

I think Zidane is probably the second best, but I expect Ronaldinho to surge past him with a brilliant summer next season. My ratings since 1986 are:

Maradona 145
Zidane 136
Maldini 134
Ronaldinho 132+p
Van Basten 132
Gullit 132
Ronaldo 131
Henry 130
Baggio 129
Rooney 129+p
Gascoigne 129 ~

" overall sports coverage tends to be very good......."

A few years back I would have agreed with you Maurice but, for me, now, it is overblown and intrusive.

They are no longer interested in reporting the event, they now want, nay, demand to be part of it.

He's still a few years, a few more arrests, a couple of wives/mistresses and a job with Sky away, but he'll probably get there... :(

I agree with Colin on the overall (ie. low) quality of the BBC's sports coverage. I presume Maurice has knowledge of the cost and viewing figures for the coverage of the Best funeral. TV companies are damned if they do and damned if they don't in touchy areas like funerals. I suppose they'd have been content with the figures for the Queen Mother (7 million) and the Pope (3 million) but lets face it, many programmes outdo that with some ease.
