Just heard that George Mernagh, former stable jockey to John Webber, has died of cancer. Most recently MD of Tatts (Ireland), I remember George fondly for his old-fashioned style on horses like Knock Hill, Townley Stone, Auntie Dot and Mweenish. He also rode Robert Waley-Cohen's The Dragon Master to a 100/1 success in the Henry VIII Novice Chase at Sandown in 1988. Sad news.

If I am not mistaken Knock Hill won the same race at Cheltenham twice in one year.Try working that out?.

The meeting used to be run over 2 days I believe, New Year's Eve and New Year's day. The 4 miler was run as the Happy New Year Chase one year, and the Happy Old Year Chase 364 days later. That's from memory - apologies if I've mangled it!
