Glorious Goodwood

Wish Rosallion had turned up - Goodwood would never had been a stiff enough test, and the winner's price was better before he was taken out.
So do I. I still would have been with Notable Speech aswell. That said, 3/1 without Rosallion was barmy.

It's a very quiet betting day other than betting EU like an odds-on shot.

I'm only interested in two other races, the 1.50 and the 3.00.

In the 1.50, Palace Green is my bet. He was repeatedly denied a clear run last time in one of the hottest races of the Ascot festival and I have conservatively rated him as dead-heating for third but he might have done better than that. I don’t think Murphy will be looking back on that ride with any pride and he’ll want to make amends here. He was 15/2 when I picked him out the other night but I didn't back it. The best I could get today was 9/2.

In the 3.00 I've taken 9/2 Sayedaty Sadaty. I don’t think Jan Brueghel should be favourite let alone odds on so looked elsewhere. The obvious ones are Bellum Justum and Sayedaty Sadaty with marginal preference for the latter as he ran the better in the Derby.

I've also taken these three in a three-cross in case I get lucky.

Much more interesting card tomorrow ;)

Agree with Dessie, Friday's card far better.

I've dutched EBT's Guard and Native King in the last. The former's form via Blake and Cerulean Bay keeps getting franked and the latter was most eye-catching at Chester two starts back. Returned there after for his next start I don't think the small field suited.

Jan Brueghel reminds me of Comanche Run who won the St. Leger when taking up the running just after the home turn'

Like Jan Brueghel he was as tough as old boots.

I reckon Jan Brueghel is a proper Leger horse and 6/1 is very fair

Kyprios-esque from Moore there. Great ride.

(Unlike Murphy's on SS but he was presumably riding to instructions and it looked like the horse didn't stay. Another chip away at the value of the Derby form with the other runner only managing second.)

The clash between Emily Upjohn and Opera Sing could be an absolute cracker today.

I can't see there being much between thembut I get the distinct impression the extra 2f will be more in Opera Singers favour than thr drop backin trip for Emily Upjohn

Opera Singer 3/1 bfe

Perhaps you expect too much too soon from also rans in the Derby. I find many of them come good given time pretty sure the 2nd and 3rd will win in time

Good stuff, Tan.

Yes, I try to kind of take each case on its merits and I reckoned 61 days was plenty of time to let them down after Epsom then bring them back. Maybe we'll see a different animal in the Voltigeur. The market today told its own story, drifting from 4/1 this morning out to 11/1 just before the off and the exaggerated waiting tactics didn't help. In hindsight, I do think it was more of a prep race for SS.

Well done with OS, by the way (y)

Ante post betting is always risky and I often loose a bit but sometimes it pays off.
I did mirsky in the mile and he's been taken out and Saint Lawrence in the stewards Cup cos I thought 40/1 was too big..
In the mile tomorrow ive got a win bet on Blue for you at 12/1 and an ew bet on
URBAN SPRAWL 33/1.
i think we all know C Johnson likes to target goodwood and I thought this looked a plot.
Finished 3rd in the Brittanica last year and then ran 13 times between then and December and was gelded,
Didn't run again before it's 9th of 9 last time and Billy Lochnane rides tomorrow.drawn 1 gives him every chance of leading all the way.now 10/1 best price.
In the Stewards Cup I took 10/1 Albashher win only and I've done ROCKET RODNEY 50/1.

I was looking at stats about the draw and I was a bit surprised at some of the views.
Low numbers in the mile and high in the stewards Cup was what I was expecting but some sites disagree.
But 10/12 in the mile were all drawn 9 or under Johan showed last year that high can win.
Last 12 were drawn 18,2,5,2,3,3,3,1,9,13,8

In the stewards Cup
In the last 33 years there have been no winners from stalls 5,6,7,8,13,14,16,20,24,27,28.
There have been 3 winners from 2,3,4,11,15,26
2 winners from 1,10,18,19
1 winner from 9,12,17,21,22,23,25,30.

Albashher is drawn high
Rocket rodney in 3..

Rohaan and summerghand are a couple of others I might back,we will see.

I'm with you on Urban Sprawl, Outsider. I like that they gelded him, there's every chance it'll bring about the 3 or 4lb improvement that he needs based on his best form.

Desperate Hero has turned into one hell of a good horse for Channon jnr. Could this be the male version of the late Highfield Princess? He was rated at low as 77 at the start of his 2023 campaign. He's now rated 104, having his best season ever, winning a couple of class 2 handicaps before placing against Makarova last time. He's versatile ground wise, having won on different goings, which I think could mark him out as being quite special. Yes, he's up against some big guns tomorrow, but he's bang in form, and whatever happens, I need him on my side for betting purposes.

I had Brioni in the first today, just touched off at a big price, and the Beckett horse Original Outlaw, just touched off by the stable mate. I finished the day wondering what an earth I need to do to back a horse who has its head in front at the finish line. Hopefully I can get one tomorrow.

Cracking sprint at Goodwood today with 3 very good horses heading the market.

I am hoping it lies between Big Evs and Alfoora and they can keep Believing at bay.

I've dutched the pair and taken Evens.

There must be a chance Wafie 3/1 is thrown in off 83 in the last race. He looked a different horse at Hamilton after he was gelded

Well Goodwood isn’t called Glorious for nothing. Haven’t been since pre pandemic and it was better than ever. It really is the best meeting in the world to go to in my opinion for several reasons
  • The setting is unbeatable
  • Parking for many is free and there are courtesy buses or buggies to get you to the course
  • It’s well organised to get out of the racecourse afterwards....no hideous queues
  • It’s well laid out so easy to get around
  • There are so many places to sit down!
  • Attention to detail including free strawberries and cream from 3.45 daily
  • Free rose buttonholes when people come in
  • All the staff are happy...and genuinely so. It’s not faked!
  • The racing is brilliant and you can easily get very close to the horses
  • There is minimal corporate
But Goodwood just get what it takes to make a great day’s entertainment. They are not after the spend, spend, spend crowd who are there to get pissed regardless. And as a result it’s a very pleasant experience.
I had a fabulous day and had five winners which went down very well with the friends I went with who provided the picnic and Pimms (my role was tipster so I delivered 😊).

Ryan Moore was at his most superb on Jan Brueghel and Opera Singer and later on Dreamy who has a fitting name. It was definitely worth looking at horses in the paddock as I picked out Mr Chaplin on looks and Sparkling Plenty ew.

I could never ever back a first time handicap runner but he's from the right stable and I am scared of him but I'm happy with my two trackers in this New Chelsea and Assailant.

I almost got the chance to go about 40 years ago. I won a competition in the racing paper (the Handicap Book, forerunner to the Raceform Update and eventually incorporated in the Weekender). You had to take the six given previous winners of the PTS Laurels Hcap (nowadays the Chesterfield Cup) and work out in which order they'd finish if they raced each other off their marks on good ground and the distances separating them. I got all six in the right order and four of the distances correct (as the judges deemed), enough to win the first prize: tickets for two to PTS Laurels day at the meeting. To say I was excited is putting it mildly, imagining me and Mrs O swanking about among the toffs.

When the letter came through, though, my heart sank. In the envelope were two entry tickets and a chitty for the car park. Considering the fanfare with which the paper announced the comp, I expected travel fare and at least one night's hotel accommodation. However, back then, there was no way we could afford the former let alone both, so the tickets were binned.
