Godolphin - Sick, lame and Lazy coming along.

Hi Chris, I was wondering how Third Set was coming along as he looked a serious contender for some nice prizes over a mile this summer after a successful UAE Carnival. Also, whatever happened to Majestic Marauder? I know Stoute held him in very high esteem and then he was transfered to Godolphin and hasn't been seen since!!!

Third Set (Frankie Dettori) has taken a long time to come good having looked a miler with some promise out in Dubai this spring. This morning he looked in good form as he went 2l clear of lead horse Night Hour and Dettori only had to give him an inch of reign to go a couple clear. Working over 7f on the all weather surface he looked in good order and is slowly being brought along with the Celebration Mile on the agenda next month.

Can't help you on Majestic Marauder, he is not in training.

From tomorrows London Times, browsing on the site, came across this...the MJ rumour is interesting.

Shortage of rides left McEvoy with simplest of decisions

Chance to remain employed by Sheikh Mohammed within his Australian operation was a no-brainer

Only the lazy stay in a job without fulfilment, so it is no surprise that Kerrin McEvoy is going home to Australia tomorrow. In his sixth year as Frankie Dettori's able deputy, McEvoy found himself close to redundant, so barren have been the fortunes of Godolphin. The chance to remain employed by Sheikh Mohammed, within his flowering Australian operation, was a no-brainer.

McEvoy made an immediate impression in Britain, both with his riding and his personality. Like many Australians, he presents himself and his sport with articulacy. A trusted substitute for Dettori, including a St Leger win in 2004, he also rode regularly for Sir Michael Stoute.

He rode in France yesterday, finishing fifth on Collection in the Prix Eugene Adam won by the Henry Cecil-trained Twice Over. After a leaving party, he will miss Goodwood to take up duties with Darley Australia. He calls it “an exciting opportunity”.

More pertinently, given their famine, Godolphin say they have no plans to replace him. Nor, however, do they have plans to replace Saeed bin Suroor as trainer.

This, despite rumours that Mark Johnston, who presently prepares juveniles to be moved on to the operation, was about to be appointed. “Total nonsense,” Johnston responded briskly.

With Godolphin, I believe 2 of their (many) problems are as follows:

- they seem to attempt to farm these conditions races, as opposed to run their horses in group races to ascertain at an earlier stage how much talent any particular horse has. Some horses can only take a limited amount of racing, and these conditions races are really of no benefit to Godolphin - they may as well have a go at winning Group races with their better bred animals. In addition to these conditions races, they often aim a promising maiden who is extremely well bred, at a listed race as opposed to stepping him/her up to find out whether they may have something to go to war with, so to speak.
- in the last few seasons, they seem to have real problems with getting their 2 year olds to the track - anyone with any ideas as to why this is? They seem to be faring a little better this year, but there's no reason why they couldn't get them out competing earlier in the season, as it's not as if many of their 2 year olds are slow maturing, middle distance types.
