Gold Cup (Ascot)

interesting read Steve

the only issue i have with F&G tomorrow is that the form of his last race isn't much

to the eye..he didn't win comfy..and the 2nd and 4th ratings wise ..don't make good reading

he may well be tons better at further..he may not..but 2/1 ish would be very short to gamble he is a lot better than that run ..over a lot further

i won't be betting..the race is a bore to me generally..only Yeats gave me much interest in it

so good luck..but go steady out there..i don't want you losing those CC winnings;)

Nice piece, Steve, and thanks for the link.

Thanks Col. I’m really thinking that Fame is an odds-on shot at an odds-against price, It’s only the question whether he stays keeping his price big. He’s bred on the same Montjeu/Shirley Heights cross as Prix Royal-Oak winner Montare and the Dosage reassures us he’ll be fine.

It goes without saying he is far and away the classiest of these on form and the only Group 1 winner in the field (a multiple one at that).

Opinion Poll is my idea of a place only bet at odds of about 25/1.

Steve

just thinking

Do you think F&G really appreciated that ground last time?..he has always seemed better with a not too firm a surface

you need to do a race dance..i think its too fast for him at the moment

Cheers EC, thanks for the concern.:p

If I can't get stuck into this one I'd never have a bet! He's simply too good to miss.

I love this race. If he isn't it I don't know who is. Like I've said before I wasn't at all worried about his earlier form this season,he was limbering up for the big occasion. This is the horse that So You Think has taken the focus off and this is the horse that will go one better in his race than SYT did in his. Fill yer boots...

In relative terms he's probably at his best with a bit of cut, but they'll be no excuses in terms of the going. He'll be fine on this and if anything it will show off his superior class. Soft going tends to bring the also rans together with the classier types, so I'm fine with this going.

I should like to see F & G win as I think it is great to see top class 12f horses going for the GC but I fear he won't stay and I am with Duncan.

I don't know if Fame and Glory is a certainty or place lay-he has loads of improvement in him but the distance is an unknown.
Kasbah Bliss travelled well for a long way last year and I think he might have finished slightly lame-I think I will back him without the fav.

Didn't realise quite how stamina laden Fame and Glory's pedigree was. Won't be opposing him now. Could be a back to lay as he'll travel sweetly enough.

The trouble with the race for me is that the few horses we know stay the distance are probably not good enough or past their best.

If Fame and Glory stays the distance, then he has a Yeats's chance, but is he value and will the easier going hinder him?

Anyway, I've gone ew on Brigantin for the not very scientific reasons that Fabre owes me nothing after Pour Moi's Derby victory, doesn't tend to believe his geese are swans, the horse should be fit, and has as good a chance of getting the trip as anything else.

Perhaps Manighar and F&G will fill the other two places.

Was hoping to get a bit of value with Askar Tau but rain looks to have dented his chance's big time.

I like the French horse Brigantin. Looks an improver, top stable (only runner this week),handles any ground & worth a few bob eachway at 20's.

Good luck.

If you go through some of the better horses who will be better on soft and will have a great chance of staying, you'd have to come to Opinion poll. I'm not looking to back every Godolphin horse but at 16/20s, he's very big e/w when you consider how many won't go on ground or have little chance of staying.

Here i go again and I know the signs all too well.
Yes, Fame And Glory is a good horse but no I don't like him.
Why's that? Oh I think he has done well by the absentees he's come across.
he's there when the others are not.
yes, he's won masses of money and you are completely right, he walks on water like the wind.
I still don't care for him.

So, as i said, here i go again & it's the old ones, too:
Kasbah Bliss, Tastahil and that Sir m Prescott's Motrice, what's that doing there? Him too. Not so old either.

I'm just feeling the lack of winners so i get a bit anti!
Make allowances!:)

I fancy Manighar - wasn't he out in Aus for the Melbourne Cup but didn't run? Seem to remember backing him then - by Linamix he'll appreciate any rain.
