Positive bulletin on Don Cossack

Gordon Elliott plans to give Don Cossack just one run before he defends his Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup crown next March - as long as the star chaser shows sufficient progress from injury. The nine-year-old is well on the road to recovery from a tendon problem, but Elliott reiterated that the six-times Grade One scorer would be retired if it looks as though he might not reach the heights to which he has grown accustomed.
"He scanned OK a few weeks ago," the County Meath handler told At The Races.
"I think he could be back within a month, then he'll start on roadwork.
"He'll probably do eight weeks of that, get re-scanned and if everything is OK we'll start back with him then - but everything will have to be 110 per cent.
"It'll be day by day. If he stays OK, he'll be back and if he doesn't, he'll have a happy retirement.
"If the horse is 110 per cent the plan would be to have one run - I'm not sure where yet - and then the Gold Cup, but if he's not 110 per cent he'll be retired.
"He doesn't owe us anything."

Same again (hopefully) for Cue Card according to Sporting Life:

Cue Card set for Wetherby return
Cue Card is on course to make his seasonal reappearance in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on October 29.
Victory in the West Yorkshire showpiece last autumn ignited a tremendous campaign for Colin Tizzard's stable stalwart, with the 10-year-old going on to land the Betfair Chase at Haydock and the King George VI Chase at Kempton before a costly fall in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
He bounced back to win at Aintree before suffering defeat at Punchestown and is reported in rude health following a summer break.
"Cue Card is fine and having brought him back in early last year, we thought we'd do the same this year, so he came back on July 1," said Tizzard.
"He's cantering now and will do that for six weeks or so. He's also getting two or three hours out in the paddock every day.
"He's a 10-year-old now, so we want to look after him and if we do that hopefully we can have him in the same form as he was last season.
"We'll be sticking to the same plan, hopefully starting off at Wetherby again."

Cue Card won't win a CGC now, you have to go back to 1969 (What A Myth) to find a horse older than ten winning the Gold Cup, Cue Card will be eleven by next March.

I'd be slightly surprised if Coneygree or the Don line up next March and Cue Card surely missed his best chance the last time.
I'd back Vautour if he turned up on the day but the vibes seem to be that Douvan will go that way so I took a little bit of 16/1.

I watched the race again yesterday: Cue Card was going so well he must have been involved in the finish?

Such a shame

CC doesn’t have many miles on the clock so even at 11, with good ground, I’d give him a chance (assuming in the same form as last year)

Hopefully Coneygree comes back from his injury, but even if he does, will need a downpour on the day to have a chance and that may not be good enough

Thistlecrcak has the potential but his price is mental

Willie’s got loads of options but am sure he doesn’t know which will be his best chance GC so we’ve got no chance

Don Cossack on his way back from injury

Can’t have a strong view (or bet) at this stage

douvan will stay over 2-2.5 miles next year. be fairly surprised if anything else was considered for the time being.

I got over my scepticism of Tom Scudamore on Thistlecrack quite early-on, as it was clear even he couldn't stop the horse's relentless winning streak, but would he be any kind of a handicap in novice chases? And would that handicap - if one existed - be exacerbated if Thistlercack was asked to take on seasoned-chasers, as part of a Gold Cup campaign?

Or will Brennan get the ride?? :ninja:

Over Cue Card? No chance, Even if it's likely that Thistlecrack provides him with the better chance of winning the race, PB would be to sentimental I reckon.

Really?
Surely he would pick the best horse?

Colin Tizzard must wake up so happy every day having those two machines in his yard!

Surely Paddy will never be in the position to have to pick. He was the Bishops choice and not Tizzards and can’t imagine Thistlecracks owners jockeying Tom off

I'd guess so as well

The only plan I have read is Chepstow in October. Perhaps it’ll be a novice at Cheltenham after that (possibly at the Paddy Power meeting as they did with Cue Card?) and then expect open company in the New year

Can’t wait for it all to get going…

Cue Card is going to be an 11yo by the time of the next Gold Cup. Much as I love the horse, there have to be better alternatives (in fact, I know there are).

I didn't suggest Scudamore should or would be jocked-off. I just asked if he is likely to prove more of a liability over fences, than he was over hurdles.

To be fair to Tom Scu, he never put a foot wrong on Thistlecrack last season, but then again, the horse was miles clear of anything that he met, and never really had to get serious in a race. I'm not sure if it will play-out quite the same way, over fences.
