Goodwood Cup

I'd presumed MA would be close to evens so I was stunned to see 4/1 generally available this morning. That was a serious value price despite my considerable reservations about Spencer so I ended up going in heavily.

Pretty much the same but no complaints really. It's like I backed Intello in the Poulains knowing the draw was horrendous so when things unfolded the way they did I accepted it. Same when you back this horse with JS riding.

Yes, but you'd imagine he'd get things right now and again.

All he had to do here was stay in the pack. Brown Panther was the only serious danger. If he'd stayed withing four or five lengths of him he'd have at least got very close.

Jamie Spencer did the only thing he could on a doubtful stayer, and sat out the back for as long as he dare. He may have looked full of running when he came down the hill, but when push came to shove the horse simply ran out of gas; period.

He wasn't a doubtful stayer imo. Finished like a train at Melbourne and ultimately he's running mainly against handicappers there. I think he might not have liked the track also.

Why do you have him down as a doubtful stayer?

He was going on strongly at the end of the Melbourne Cup.

Thinking back, it's possible the horse just wasn't off today and was ridden to make sure he didn't win.

He was probably told to ride at the back. He might have received a red ear if he had sat close for the first 12f and then run out of gas early.

I'm not advocating sitting close, just five or six lengths closer than he was. Altano was a couple of lengths in front of him during the race and got placed.

Like Suny, I'm not convinced he would have won anyway but he wasn't given a chance.

His season is all about Melbourne. He already has a mark high enough to get into the race, so the priority for now is to avoid doing anything that will bump it up any further.

He's no longer a 'doubtful stayer'; he's a proven non-stayer.
The Melbourne Cup is run at a stop/start pace around a dust bowl about the size of Chester.
Imvho, he was 'off' for his life today.

Even the sectionals support Jamie: :)

Btw, as Jimbo pointed out prior to the race, winning yesterday would probably not have affected his handicap mark at all - check the respective ratings.

I'm more inclined to interpret it that the pace was even, not disadvantaging those that raced in midfield or more prominently and who made their move as Mount Athos was trying to make his. He burst himself trying to get on terms, which is why he had nothing left late on.

Frankel was slowing down dramatically the day Queally went miles too soon and not many doubted he would stay further than that mile.

With Melbourne as the target I don't think they'll want to be peaking any time before that.

Amazing what lengths you'll go to, to ignore what is staring you in the face.

A punter extremely dislikes a jockey.

Said jockey is up on a horse said punter is thinking of backing.

Presumably, said punter is aware of this beforehand?

In that case, why complain about the jockey, when you seemingly had the foresight that the jockey was a weakness, if that is even the case?
