Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Punchestown)

Studied it at length. An absolute minefield. Only conclusion I came to was that Cleatus Poolaw had the potential to be decently handicapped on his best hurdle form. At those odds though, I won't bother.

I am currently on ebay, bidding on an opinion on this race, as I don't currently have one and would like to acquire one.

Failing that, I will wait to see if Maurice shares his opinion, before promptly adopting it and attempting to pass it off as my own.

Calling it a "Grand National Trial" is certainly a misnomer

Since 2000 you have the following hard facts re where horses have gone from the Punchestown Grand National Trial Chase Handicap to the next instance of a target race, as opposed to the anecdotal views that get rolled out and repeated which maybe held water 40 years ago.

Target raceNumber of runners from trial raceNumber of winnersNumber of places
Fairyhouse Irish Grand National Chase Handicap59013
Downpatrick Ulster National Chase Handicap5637
Punchestown Grand National Trial Chase Handicap i.e. going back for a rerun4647

In fact when cross referencing the Punchestown Grand National 'Trial' Chase Handicap 3m 3f 6y Listed against about 400 other national hunt races in UK and IRE, the only the race where runners go to the next renewal of that seems like one to take note of is the Navan Troytown Chase Handicap 3m Grade3 in November.
With that 40 runners have gone there, 2 have won and 11 have placed, giving an ew strike of 32.5% and a £1 lsp to isp of £20.50 and roi 51.25%. And we are not talking about in the annals of history either, the last winner was 2023 and last place only in 2022. So that might be one to have noted down.

As to what's gonna win this Punchestown Grand National 'Trial'? Not my kind of race but I'll do small stakes tv bets dutching Velvet Elvis, Favori De Champdou & Will Do, as I have the current top 3 in the betting my top 3 in my form ratings.

I was hoping for a better price for Will do
Just found this on page 3.
Didn't realise it was being run today.
Will do was 2nd.15/2.
I would have probably backed it to win so I'm glad I missed it.
Too many unnecessary threads on here at the moment imo.
No need for all the Cheltenham threads at least until the weights come out.

Aye, it is getting a bit can’t see the wood for the trees. I wonder if “upcoming races” can be split from “general racing topics” then you could make one or the other your home page and/or toggle between the two.

Spanish Harlem ( Willie Mullins ) finished 4th ( 7/1, though it was 14/1 yesterday ) after starting at the rear of the field and racing widest of all most of the way. Looked to be going fairly well approaching the home turn. Could be one for the Scottish National ( 6th last year ), or the Irish National.

Sorry about that - you're right, maybe I should have waited for the weights to come out before creating the individual race discussion templates.

I am glad you didn't miss an actual winner over it.
