Greatest American

The schmaltz vote, Euro - sadly, we've become slightly tainted by the American-style celebritization (I just made it up - there's probably a proper word for it) of people of no or low talent, but loads of gooey publicity.

I voted in that poll for Brunel. I thought Clarkson did a fabulous profile of him and changed my mind for me from Shakespeare.

Pee - so did I! I've been a great fan of him for years, and while Clarkson did a bang-up job of promoting him, he'd have been my shoo-in anyway.

Why isn't Fergal Sharkey listed. Surely he was/is a great American. Was it because he became the Housemartins I ask myself.

In the spirit of 'let those who are without sin etc...'

In a recent Radio Poll for 'Greatest Ever Irishwoman' in Ireland, Michelle Smith De Brun was prominent.

For those who don't know Michelle, a moderate swimmer, married a convicted doper and the following year won 3 Olympic Golds with an outboard motor attached. Some, but not I, said she makes Paula Radcliffe look like Ben Johnson.

The fact that Clarkson got Brunel to No.2 proves he is the greatest living Briton. :D

I reckon he would have been able to get virtually anyone in the top 5. He'd easily have got Shakespeare or Darwin ahead of Dianna.
