Hamsters

gradually it's gone down to eight

 Just the eight??
I know it sounds a lot but honestly it doesn't seem like that. Annie, Brian and Joe are deeply fickle and seem to have several homes between them so are not always here. Annie can be gone for weeks, months even. She graced us with her presence for three days last week and has gone off on her jollies again. We'll be lucky to see her before Christmas. Harry is semi feral and keeps himself to himself, causes no bother at all. Rosie lives on Mollys bed, doesn't go out and I hardly see her. So that just leaves my three youngest who I handreared from the age of two days who are in and out all day & night. They are the only three that make their presence felt. I cannot remember the last time all eight were together in the same place. A few weeks ago I did have seven here for dinner and I'd say that was the closest I've got to the full house since we moved in.

"He enjoyed the six mice we had years ago... " - with a creamy Hollandaise sauce and new potatoes, Griffs? :)

Well done, you. You must have an inexhaustible energy supply and no-one can say you do any of your nurturing small-time, human or animal! One of life's natural born carers, I reckon.

Mr GG is a little more unkind, he says I'm a collector of all things  I prefer your version of me :D

:D Tell him that sometimes collections end up on car boot sales, and you're eyeing around £25 for him, give or take!

Clark just jumped off the sofa again, he is totally crazy, he has always done it, thats where his name came from, Clark Kent, the alter ego of SUPERHAM

Does he support West Hamster United? Holiday in Hamsterburg, eat Hamsterburgers with extra fries, and enjoy watching Hamsterlet on the stage?

Took you a moment to ferret that one out, didn't it?

Oooh, thinking about the rats - can you take them outside wearing little body harnesses, Griffs, or do they stay indoors the whole time? I love to see ferrets in their wee harnesses, so I wonder why not rats?

I have no idea  I don't think we'll try that though. They'd better stay in Daisys bedroom due to our 573 cats.

Can anyone offer advice as to the best chew toy to get a hamster, Clark is destroying everything at the moment, he went through 3 lava bite chew stones in 1 day today? The gnawing is keeping me awake

Please tell me you didn't name a hamster after an Australian seamer...... :P

Ii was going to call him SUPERHAM as he routinely jumps off my sofa and bed and runs around the floor so I went with Clark as a shortening of the alter ego of Superman. I would have called him Yeti after Matthew Hoggard if I was going to name him after a bowler!!! Although in 2 years Clark may be the best in the world the way he is going, 48 wickets at 17 so far I think in his career

I've had 3 pet rats - Mrs Frisby, Blot & Oodie. Blot became quite well known in Lambourn and even got a mention in the Sporting Life Weekender - he also terrified the life out of Steve Cauthen who was staying with my boss where I was lodging. It was a very amusing moment to see my all time racing hero standing on a sofa begging me to remove Blot from room.

Rats are hugely entertaining and very clever - you can train them to do plenty of tricks. Mrs Frisby was excellent at jumping my Sindy dolls show jumps.

Mrs Frisby (thinks... ) "Oh, gawd, not the bloody Sindy doll showjumps again! And someone told me these humans were intelligent! Okay, petal, here I go again - just for you... why couldn't I have got the research scientist?"

Daisys rats arrived last Friday and she intends to clicker train them

Would Clark like a toy that he could play with an eat at the same time? I bought Pete a grass nest and stuffed wood roll from Zooplus. Pete likes eating the dried corn cobs they sell too. They're harder work than most of the chews.

Blimey! Talk about spoilt rotten! I'd give Pete an armful of straw and tell him to make his own nest - they won't thank you, Griffin. Two months from now, they'll be getting ASBOs for unruly behaviour because they're bored.

Gerbils are ok, but hamsters are the absolute berries.......... for getting the gunk out of your golf spikes.

I used to take my rats out for walks - they used to sit under my jacket snuggles up on my shoulder - got a few funny looks if I stopped to chat to people cos they always used ot want to know who it was and a nose would suddenly appear.... :D

they loved going out in the car too - Id strap the cage onto the front seat and the pair of them would climb to the top shelf and look out the window - their favourite thing was if I had te window open!

I had a lot of Hammys as a youngster, but they arent very squishable, so when we got young visitors that didnt understand you cant squeeze a hamster....

I had a ginger rat, called, "Ginge" and we use to do the same thing, Trudi. We would stand up by the road and when people use to stop for a chat, his little nose and whiskers would appear and frighten some people half to death. I think some of the older generation thought I was a little weird from an early age. :) It was certainly a conversation stopper!!!

We had four rats, Bernie, Justin, George and Rupert. We're down to just Bernie and Rupert these days though. George was always a sickly runt (r, r) so we never expected him to last that long, anyway, and Justin had to be put down over Christmas.

Bernie and Rupert are characters, though we can't keep them still long enough to try and get those harnesses on them! They don't do tricks, other than the usual manic leaping that I think all rats tend to do.

I've had hamsters in the past but I prefer the rats, though they are less fastidious about where they pee.
