Wondering what the score is these days. A few years ago I recall people complaining as they wouldn't take a resonable bet, and for known faces it was tenners EW only. While at the same time they had no issue with people throwing thousands into the machines.

At the time I thought a solution would be to introduce a rule where...
1 machine = £500 liabilty per single bet.
2 machines = £1000 liability
and so on.

Without wanting to gloat...

In Australia we have TAB areas in almost every Pub/Tavern. It's totally anonymous. You seem to be able to collect a return of between Aus $3 - 4K (so 1.5 - 2K sterling) per bet. If your selection would return more, then they give you that bet, then ask if you (or rather the terminal does) want to the rest of the stake at the revised fixed odds. If you're still happy wiht the revised odds, you can go back in again. The barmaids dont know or care, they just wish you good luck and go back to serving beers. It's all very automated and anonymous. You can only do singles this way, but the win and place elements are seperate, so can bet variably. You can also do forecast/tricast combinations.
No sneaky EW doubles, though you could do it manually, but the TAB terminals tend to shut down at Midnight (3pm UK time). The other downside is you can't get a bet on UK racing for races that are due to run after 7:30pm UK time. Windsor 7:35? Not possible.

They do tend to be a little tighter with their odds when below the 8/1 area (on average), and rarely offer the best price out there (but that's online stuff for peanuts generally). Often at the larger prices, you can get a semi decent bet on, then it might drift after a couple of hours (they follow the UK market closely, obviously), so often get the chance to go back in again for a little more, or if happy with revised price, you can hit the value out of it.

It's a fortunate cash option I have down here anyway.
