Mrs O has been researching tour holidays to NY/East Coast for this summer (late July/early Aug).

So far we've been looking at the main tour operators. I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations in terms of operators?

There seems to be quite a variation in prices.

I have not been in the area
but my advise is to book the trip yourself in internet.
I've tried the internet. The flights are no cheaper at the moment although I suspect I can get a better price on hotels. However, none of us has been to NY before and I have an 82yo mother-in-law to think about. The security of organised transfers and guided tours will be important to her.

for the prices of the flight
go to:
www.edreams.com
once you see the company, the time and date , go to the company web and look for the same flight.

I have not gone to NY, but when going to Nevada /Arizona or Florida I booked everything myself.

Do it yourself Dessie.

Continental used to be the cheapest flight into Newarke, don't fly into JFK (though both airports will detain yoy for about 2 hours to clear US customs). If you reverse your intinary you mind find Logan cheaper.

From Newarke take the Olympia trails bus (it's right at the end of the rank and leaves every 10 mins) into Manhattan. It'll save you about $40. Then you get somebody with a United Nations expense account to buy all your food, drink and general entertainment.

Basically, it's well worth doing, and for all my criticisms of America(ns), the NewYork area is undoubtedly exciting and a must see place. The people might have a reputation for being rudest and most obnoxious in the union, but that still makes them ten times more friendly than the average English person. Although I'm baned (as I've lamented at length) I wouldn't put anyone off going there. Especially since w@nker Bush has destroyed the dollar

Checked eDreams, then checked with flight company.

The flgiht company is dearest. eDreams is about 10% more expensive than via price comparison websites.

Nowhere near as bad as that in my experience, but a bit of a drag all the same

Its the best city in the world (bar London), but if you want to go a little further afield too, Philidelphia is well worth a visit

One tip if you have a few bob spare is the helipcopter ride around Manhattan. Goes from the Chelsea side of the island. Even just a 20 minute trip is breathtaking

depending on your interests i think the following attractions are well worth it

Museum of Modern art and Whitney
Harlem
Ellis island
Empire State
Central Park
Rockefeller centre (my fav skyscraper)
Whole upper east side (inc Guggenheim)
Ground zero (sadly)

All a bit obvious but cannot be missed

A little overated perhaps are

Time square (too disneyfied)
Wall St (suprisingly drab)

and you wont like me saying this...St patricks catherdal (you would have seen better)

Greenwich Village is best for drinks and night out

Spooky and interesting - I am looking for trips in the April/May period next year to "celebrate" my 40th!

Virgin seemed reasonable as its just hubby & I and all we need is a half decent bed for the night but I am willing to book on the internet separate flights and hotels (but apparently despite it being the big FOUR OH the Warldof is out of the equation!)

Any other ideas - bearing in mind i like to be comfortable on a flight so no low cost stuff ;)
