I've been diagnosed with Horner's Syndrome during a visit to the GP regarding the migraines that I get, which have increased of late in severity and frequency. I don't know much about it at all - only the little my doctor told me & I found on googling it. He discovered it on looking at my eyes - one of my pupils is smaller that the other. He said it was a neurological sign that warranted investigation so I now have to go for a chest X-ray so he can eliminate that as a cause - apparently chest conditions can cause it as a nerve to the eye runs through the chest or something. Does anyone know more about it or have experience of it?

I am also now on a daily medication called Pizotifen which is supposed to prevent migraines occuring. I really didn't want to go down that route as I was very reluctant to take medication daily but it has got to the stage where I really have no choice; I'm also overdosing on strong painkillers in an attempt to get rid of the pain so I figured one tablet a day was probably better for me than a shedload of opiates daily! Does anyone have experience of taking these type of drugs - do they work? Are there any side-effects? I have heard that they can precipitate weight gain (I hope not!!!) and my doctor reckons that 3 out of 4 people on this medication suffer from no migraines at all. I would be interested to hear of other people's experiences though as although I know many people who suffer from migraine, none of them have been on this type of preventative medicine.

Poor girlie - just Google the condition and the name of the drug: I've just found out my cholesterol level's 7.1, so it'll be goodbye from me shortly too, but on Googling I found over 63,000 sites on the stuff! And some VERY interesting ones on why NOT to take the statins that doctors regularly bung at high-cholesterol patients. Good luck with overcoming the migraines, Dom. They're crippling bloody things and they need knocking on the head. As it were... :brows:

It can be very unwise to self diagnose and treat yourself or refuse treatment on the basis of sites on the internet .

Hope it does the trick Dom and take care

I once Googled some symptoms I was suffering from - within an hour I was on the verge of arranging the funeral.

Get well soon Dom. I suffer from the odd migraine and I'm very glad I only have to worry about them a couple of times a year at most.

Dom - I was talking to a guy who had Horners syndrome and he said he sat in a corner for a while, then stuck in his thumb and pulled out a plum.
Said this seemed to help.

It is a conditon that men suffer from mainly, horner being the plural of horny out of "to have the horn".

To get this condition,a pre-requiste is to have a muscle that can be stimulated by thought or massage. It is normally found in young hetros who have great hand eye co-ordination.

It can be very embarrasing if one gets an attack in a public place.(a Cafe or Bar)

The hands begin to move rapidly up and down in a vertical fashion, grasping the now very painful muscle.Relief is attained only when enough pressure is applied,so that collected discharge is ejected. This can be very messy and a packet of tissues should alway be carried.

This condition causes the eyes to water, and,in extreme cases, cause severe pains behind the eyes.

Early recognition is vital with this condition. Most children around the age of ten or eleven are liable to show signs, the main one being a small black spot in the palm of the dominant hand.

Treatment:

If caught early, boxing gloves worn day and night for at least 18 months.

Advanced condition can normally be treated by having several friends of the opposite sex who can free you from the physical effects. The mental effects can be diluted by playing very loud music at night.

I hope that i have been of assistance.PM me if you require my physical presence.

Derek - she's got Horner's syndrome, not Altzheimers......

When I seen DOM'S heading I was going to respond in a whimisical way, by stating something similar I.E. HONIER'S SYNDROME :o suffered by men only..... but on 2nd thoughts having suffered migraine myself(and its not nice at all) I did actually abstain from any comment.... but now that someone else as broke the ice I have posted........

Get well soon Dom.....

Just to echo what Gareth and Ardross have said. Inform yourself on the web by all means, but don't let anything you see on it override proper medical advice. If in doubt, get a second medical opinion.

The web tends to be full of so many extreme case studies it can give the appearance of being the norm, and is also crammed with homeopathic quacks whose need for self promotion is caused by their lack of results.

I did wonder how long it would take to get the 'horn' jokes out of the way!

AC - very good!!

Cheers guys - to be honest, I don't actually feel ill; I'm able to carry on life as usual inbetween migraine attacks generally although I do have seemingly omnipresent headaches at the moment too.

I agree totally about self-diagnosis via the net - it certainly can have you planning the funeral if you try it! I didn't know a lot about Horner's Syndrome so I googled it to get a broad overview. I know what a wealth of knowledge there is available via the folks of this site hence thought it would be worth asking if anyone has had any experience of this type of condition.

The syndrome in itself is a sign the doc picked up - it tends to indicate some other underlying problem, I'm guessing it's to do with the neurological changes associated with migraines so as I'm going through a bad phase at the moment the changes were noticeable.

The doc reckons it is worth investigating as a neurological condition; the chest x-rays are being done to try to eliminate chest infections and the like as the source of the signs. It does appear, from what I've read about it, to have been associated with migraines in some people so I'm hoping it's no more sinister than that! I was curious really on getting back from the quack's so thought I'd ask the masses what they knew about it! :D

I'm not bothered - I'm 60, I've enjoyed most of my life and if the heart goes bust tomorrow, so what? I see every day what overstaying your system's ability to function is like, and I ain't prepared to linger on for that heap o' dung! Julie - you get the horses. Who wants the horsey pictures and books - reserve now to avoid disappointment! :D

Krizon, there is only one thing for it - you will have to come and work for me. :D Ever since my friend (who you have met) came to work for me, her blood pressure has gone down dramatically, as has her cholesterol and she is so much fitter. She goes out walking with the dog, and can chat to me about racing to her hearts content. She even said she had her first holiday this year when she wasn't stressed and didn't have to take her laptop with her. I even set her up a betting account soon after she arrived.

You don't need an interview... just let me know when you can start! B)

Hmmm, thinks - must remember to make Fois Gras starter, Beef Wellington and Creme brulee for Jon's next visit.... followed by a large cheese selection :P

Mel - you betcha! I've got a bundle of 'em in my wallet at the moment, and I fancy a really belting Elvis-style fat-fest, just to test the arteries to their max! Of course, accompanied by a large Jack Daniels with DIET Pepsi! :D :D

Kathy - sounds fine to me. Just let me get Mum off to Sunny Pines, and I'm all yours, just as long as I get first dibs on the new Volvo truck with very shiny chrome hubs, please?

Julie - whaddya mean 'next time'? I've had nothing but slathers of naughtiness chez Poleshill, but yes, sounds great to me, and no-one will ever know why the slurry pit was hastily filled in!
