Horses you never forgave and couldn’t like

Spurred on by Granger’s dislike and dismissal of My Way De Solzen, are there any other horses we didn’t actually like? Nags that we just couldn’t get on the right side of? Horses that scuppered our chances of pulling off a mini-coup?

For me, it’s Honeysuckle. I never forgave her for barging Benie de Deuix out of the mares race in 2020, and I would never back her after that. I couldn’t stand her.

And I never saw the appeal of Sea The Stars. Yes, he won everything. But the manner of his victories were too understated for my liking. Could never back the horse because of that.

Yes, ridiculously irrational, but punting is sometimes.

Easy one, Red Rum

As for the mini coup-type horse, Arcadian Heights & Hillsdown Gold - both Tote Jackpot related.
Yes, I felt like that after Red Rum had beaten Crisp, but soon learned to love him. I think his connections were just so likeable, which obviously helped his rehabilitation in the nation’s eyes.

Great idea for a thread but I'm honestly struggling. It tends to be jockeys and trainers that come close.

I could never really take to Dawn Run, for me one of the most over-rated and over-hyped horses of all time but it was always more indifference than dislike because my opinion tends to be informed by my figures and she never put up a good one in my book.

I got into a few discussions on here about Best Mate for similar reasons although I did say I did think he was a 180+ horse. I just got a tad frustrated by the constant comparisons to Arkle because he won three Gold Cups. Galopin Des Champs looks like doing likewise but he would have Best Mate for breakfast.

Plenty of horses have nutted me for really nice returns but that's racing and I tend to move on quickly.

Plenty of horses down the years I could never catch when they won and tended to back when they didn't but I've learned to blame myself for that.

Looking forward to reading others' thoughts.

Oh, and Hallo Dandy. Half of Leicester Poly were on him, as the result of some wise guy sharing his wisdom the week before the National. I preferred to study my own form, thank you very much.

I’ve never felt so alone as I did that Saturday night at the ‘Poly Disco’.

I bet Hallo Dandy at 20/1 while in my last year at Warwick uni, but I didn't put many people onto it as I frankly thought most of the students were Tory arses and I didn't want to put (even more) money in their pockets.

The key to the horse was Good ground - it was Soft the previous year.

Anyway, I digress.

"Hate" is a strong word to apply to an animal, it's usually, the actions of the humans connected with them that makes one not a fan, but I've thought of an exception....

The following year Last Suspect coming from way back to win robbed me of not only a 20/1 win only secondary bet on Mr Snugfit, but the tricast with Greasepaint and Corbiere (the fourth one in the combo being West Tip, who I'd backed to "cop the lot" - I had a full-time job by then - at 20/1 who was cantering when he fell).

I was just getting over the flu and had a *****ing relapse!

Last Suspect - that's my nomination - tail-swishing beast, couldn't stand him!

Inca Trail for nosing Happy out of the Grand Military. And for my lost voice which lasted for the three days after. Can’t forgive him for that.

Never had much time for Kauto Star ( but that might be my dislike of PFN in there as well) and definitely none for Desert Orchid after he bit me in the stables at Wincanton.
Agree with Sea the Stars as well, I never quite got the adoration.

Sorry, Ian, but Last Suspect is one of my good guys. I was on him at 66/1 for that National and managed to talk one or two of my brothers into having something on him too.

There were celebrations aplenty in my parents' house, where we'd gathered to watch the race, that evening.

I was on Last suspect at 66/1 as well.
I was out of work at the time and all the lads at the football club paid for my day if I drove the mini bus.
Also I took a photo with my hands above my head above the crowds at the chair and when it was developed Last suspect was right in the middle.

State man is a horse I don't like.over rated.

I liked last suspect for that because my brother was on Mr Snugfit and he was absolutely lording it over me right to the overtake 🤣🤣

Mind you, it took me a while to forgive Neptune Collonges for the national ( yep, was on sunnyhillboy)
