From the Guardian podcast blog:

"There have been violent protests overnight in Budapest. Thousands of police officers were drafted in from outside the Hungarian capital after demonstrators stormed the state television headquarters. Dan McLaughlin is in Budapest. He tells me of the anger that erupted after a tape was leaked of an admission by the prime minister, Derenc Gyurcsany, that he'd lied to voters about his government's economic record in order to get re-elected."

Well, I suppose that they are fairly new to this democracy game and have yet to learn that if they riot every time a politician lies to them they're going to get absolutely knackered.

The French must be quite a fit race.

I heard an extaordinary interview yesterday on the World Service with an opposition leader in Hungary. He openly accepted that all politicians in Hungary had been telling lies, although he did try to suggest that his party had lied less than the others before the interviewer interrupted him.

I think what he mainly meant was that promises were made at election time that had no chance of being implemented. The Government had gone on lying, however, while in office about the progress being made, while the opposition had no need to continue telling lies once the campaign was over.
