I Need A Laptop

Mo -   I reckon that's why Morrisson's have been talking about selling Safeways in Gib - they struggle to go further south than Watford without getting a nosebleed, so Gib must be hell!!!!! :P  Anyhow, we want Sainsburys, we want Sainsburys...... :D

Those USB memory sticks are an absolute godsend MarkEE. In the event our offices are ever burgled and the computers stolen, I ensure I take a back up onto a memory stick every night. I also back up all the data from the offices onto the computers at home, as many companies will know, losing all your data (especially accounts information) can spell an absolute disaster for any company.

PDJ....here is a 64MB memory stick for £9. Not a hughe amount of space but surely mor than you'd need for ferrying back and fore daily?

Mem stick

If it doesn't link go to morgancomputers.co.uk and search for belkin flash drive

I have Muttley! We rely on computers so much these days, that although it wouldn't spell the end of the world, it's the damn inconvenience should all the data disappear in a fire, or via a burglary.

I have to have a contigency plans for most things or I lay awake worrying!

How exactly does a mem stick work then, is it effectively another drive ? Can you change the files on it ?

I get confused cos I have data I want to transfer so I "send" it to a CD Drive but when I access the CD I keep getting messages saying those files are "read only"
and I can't change them. Get the same when I copy and paste.

DG, yes, a memory stick is effectively a portable hard drive( there is no actual drive it's just memory sims ). With a cd -rom, the files are read only. You can copy them back to any pc and alter them there, but if you want to save them back to a re-writable cd, you can just increment the filename to get around your problem.

The amount of data you can hold on them too for such a tiny gadget is amazing. I have one attached to my key ring! They have come down in price and size in the last 12 months and have been an absolute godsend.

Thank you Dave, I copy them to a CD-RW disc.
What do you mean by increment the file name, do you mean re-name it ?

In any case if I copy the files off that CD-RW to another PC I assume I can them change them without changing the file name, have I got that right ?

Yes DG. You can copy say File1 from your cd to a different pc, work on the file, save changes and then rename the file to say File1a before copying back to the cd. Then you have both versions on the cd.

I have to give a talk next month on data protection in the workplace to the national conference of a big firm of solicitors .- scary It is amazing how much ignorance there is about the subject

Still not decided on one yet but have an idea what spec i want now. does anyone know if "ACER" is a decent enough make? They seem to be pretty affordable.
