Id Cards

Fair enough - but within the EU they can be used in place of passports.

As for the cost - I can see how it turns out to be so expensive but surely it is utterly ludicrous to make it mandatory for people to carry these cards and expect them to fork out £300 (that was the last amount I heard) for the privilege?!
 
My view too - and the view of the opposition parties, a large part of the Labour party and most of the House of Lords. So we've not heard the last of this.
 
There is no question of the charge being £300. I thought the projected cost was £80 to £100 but I stand to be corrected on that. The high figures are from reports from the likes of the LSE. The government has already stated that if the cost is significantly higher than projected they will not proceed.

I don't find the thought of ID cards offensive particularly if they replace passports and driving licences in time - a cost saving. However, I do think that the costs will turn out to be higher than currently estimated and would then oppose them on those grounds.
