IRA Decomissioning

A Catholic policeman who survived a dissident republican bomb attack has had his right leg amputated, police confirmed today.

Peadar Heffron, 33, underwent major surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast yesterday.

He had just left his home outside Randalstown, Co Antrim, to start work in west Belfast when the device exploded under his blue Alfa Romeo car early last Friday morning.

A police spokeswoman said: "His condition remains critical but stable."

As captain of the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Gaelic football team and a fluent Irish speaker, Pc Heffron represents the changing face of a service which is steadily redressing a traditional religious imbalance in policing north of the border.

This week PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott described the recently-married officer as a man of great courage.

"He is a modern-day hero, he is someone who has stepped out, someone who is doing the right things for everybody," he said.

Mr Baggott said he was confident the attack would not dissuade other recruits from a nationalist background from joining the service.

Dreadfully sad - I don't care which side religious/political extremists are on, what they think they represent or what they think they will achieve. It's feckin 2010 now, not 1510, 1710 or even 1910. Mutilating a young married man is a worthless, feeble-minded act of cowardice, and I don't care who you are, where you come from, or what you think your grievance is.

Perfectly put Krizon and your sentiments are echoed by all here. Another terrible thing about this is that his poor wife was travelling in her car behind him and witnessed the whole horror of it, God awful thing for anyone to see let alone her. Let's hope they get the *censored* who did this quickly and that they are dealt with in no uncertain terms. Judging by the faces of the police that awful morning I'd say that was a given.

Oh, the poor girl. Enough to send you off your head, isn't it? Imagine seeing your loved one suffer an incident like that. It's always possible that perpetrators of cruelties do get picked off eventually, although that in itself, as we all know, perpetuates tit-for-tat revenge crap.

The situation seems to be that the perpetrator/s of this wretched deed is lost in the emptiness of political hatred, one of the many false gods of extremism. He or they can't possibly be Christians of any persuasion, since their action stamps upon Christ's own exhortations to love one's brother as thyself, etc.

One can but wish the youngsters all the best, that they be strong and live well in the future, and that they will fail to respond with hate for hate.

(And I'm saying that as a non-Christian, albeit baptised!)

Krizon, I couldn't have put it into word's better myself and I couldn't agree more, so I won't even try!

All I will add is that the sooner these people are caught and made to answer for their actions by the powers that be then the better for all. Most people here just want to move on and not to be forever chained to the past.
