A very interesting card. Spillane’s Tower returns to hurdles at 2.37 as a prep for the Betfair Chase. Willie runs two in the 3.02 Grade 2 chase, where they’ll all have Inthepocket to beat.

Think that’s good? Wait until you see the beginners’ chase at 3.37 — quite simply the best race on the card because it’s a proper betting heat. A handful of very good horses drop right down in trip for their chase debuts, but Irish Panther is fit, and this is his trip. 13/2 looks the best bet on the card.

I'll update later this morning.

Thanks for this.

I have nothing of value to contribute ("no change there, then," some might say), but I'll follow this thread and the racing itself with great interest.

The 3.37 is the kind of race you’ll look back on in March and realise the best horse didn’t necessarily win — or finish second, or even close.

Naas 1.20

Paul Townend takes his first outside ride of the season for Michael O’Callaghan. On the formbook, 5/2 would have been perfectly acceptable even without him.

I have Champ Kiely clear top of my ratings in the 1502 Naas Barberstown Castle Chase , plus it's most prominent in trial/pointer race stats shown below.
Inthepocket was the fav earlier this morning and I have it about joint 2nd top with Only By Night, and they both carry a lot less weight than Champ Kiely. I'm going to watch the betting closely before I decide what to do about a break even saver, partly because only Gaelic Arc has had a run yet this season.

I see the price has been cut to 9/1 this morning.
I find these daytime ‘gambles’ to be the kiss of death, usually.

Her last run was the race where Mount Ferns (Eric McNamara) was banned for 60 days when finishing ahead of her and Cayd Boy; both of whom were not too busy but just Eric was pulled in to explain.
Mount Ferns has yet to win since.

It was a joke he got dragged in and the others weren't. Hadn't he recently buried someone close?

Excellent, Slim

Spillane's is out of the Betfair Chase.

I'd like to see this horse in a handicap chase this season, especially if the handicapper drops him a bit in the weights. I think it could be his best chance of actually winning a race.

Connections need to think outside of the box, something they are more than capable of. The horse is hit and miss and is now best off in a 3 mile handicap chase.

Thanks for that. I love the horse but I'm running out of excuses. That was a rancid run, fitness worries or not.

Yes. I'm hoping the assessor drops him to a sub-160 chase mark and that tempts them to a handicap chase, where I can do my bollox once and for all.
