I know jinnyj has an old thread on the topic but it seems to have fallen by the wayside in terms of the visible archive.

Just popped over to the RP site to see if anything was happening and came across this item:

I have to say, since I don't follow the AW, I am totally unaware of this jockey but with her strike rate and determination to do well, I'll be watching out for her when the turf season starts.

I'm presuming her agent has had some kind of indication from her trainers that they'll be lining up ammo for her.

She had a ride on Saturday in a race covered by ITV and they were talking her up quite a bit. Horse was on a hat-trick but looked as if she took the blind off quite late and the horse was very slow away, although apparently he had done that before, but she gave him a great ride, didn't panic, and they only just failed, and he had lost probably 10 lengths at the start, and went down by less than half a length.

Just caught an ATR interview with NdB and for some reason they got round to talking about a Flat claimer. Not following the AW I had to look him up but he might be another one to look out for and his strike rate this season is shaping up nicely.

Still claims 7lbs: Benoit De La Sayette.

Nico seems very impressed with him.

Not ‘arf, he’s 7 wins from 21 rides. Not bad for a 7lb claimer just starting out!

Yes, I'm already wondering what John Gosden might have hovering around 9-1 in the Lincoln that he can get down to within his riding weight.

I suppose he's bound to get too heavy in the next couple of years so if he ends up over jumps he might be invaluable for low weights.

Anyone know the story with Sarah Kavanagh? Who is she? What did she have for breakfast? Who's her fahder? etc?

I know it's become a bit of a cliche to say a female rider has "amazing hands" or "a great touch" but I've watched a few of her Christmas races on replay and not only does she have a great touch but she works her arse off. Smart too. If you watch Frazel Express yesterday I was surprised she even managed to get him around. Courting Vickie on New Year's Eve came second, and Kavanagh kept her held in all the right spots and pushed just when was needed. The first ride on Lacken Bridge over Christmas was also pretty good, really brought him around. Second the horse looked shagged, though.

There's in idea in sailing (racing at least) about "taking your lifts." The little small changes in angle and littles gusts that only last a few seconds, but if you're consistent in reacting to them over an entire race you can improve your positions by a metre or two, hundreds of times, for a fairly big improvement. That looks exactly like what's she's doing on her horses. The other jockeys in the races with her are all about getting a steady pace and settling into their own rhythm. She seems to know exactly when the horse has that 5% extra, even if it's only for a few strides, lets them have it, even encourages them with them in it, but never lets them give too much.

Definitely one-to-watch for me.

Sam Ewing I also watched on Stansfield. He seemed to be doing well on the flat and but jumps looks like his goal. Can anyone fill me in? Stansfield was doing pretty ok at Naas yesterday, but the horse was bullied out of space in a pack, Ewing didn't/couldn't keep him strong, he was pushed back, then fell over the fence. This is totally different to Kavanagh who seems to have no problem holding her own. Ewing, to me eyes, should benefit from that experience, he's an apprentice and young, and will learn, but from looking at his rides there seems to be a lot of names behind him. That's not a complaint, just an observation, especially when looking between the two people I've mentioned in my post.

I love this kind of analogy.

Aggregation of marginal gains, etc.

I backed Bangers and Cash last thursday and I thought the young jockey gave it a really good ride to win.
LUKA MORGAN(5)
Always prominent but when he lost his place he never panicked and steadily took charge.

I see hes had a 33/1 winner at southwell today.

Just watched the Relkeel for the first time there.

I thought Isabel Williams was brilliant on Dans Le Vent. Very tidy all the way round and took a length or two off better horses round the bends by hugging the inner. Last of the finishers but closer than the form entitled it to be.

He’s been having a lousy time with injuries. In October he came back from a lengthy absence with a back injury. Two weeks later he injured again. He was hoping to be fit enough to come back from injury over the Christmas period. He must be very frustrated.

Retirement probably on his mind also, as Jessica Harrington does not have the jump firepower she once had

I wasn't sure if I'd put this on the 'noted in running' thread but DLV is in the Lanzarote tomorrow, currently priced up at 12s tops. I'll probably have a saver on it. It isn't too far off the top of my ratings and my figure for it is based on its most recent run in the Relkeel as mentioned above. That was a career best even allowing for my going modestly with the form for the race, partly due to DLV's proximity, but another factor worth bearing in mind is that Isabel Williams wasn't allowed to claim that day and will be able to do so tomorrow. Theoretically that could add 5lbs to DLV's rating, putting him within a pound of my overall top rating.

I certainly wouldn't want to put anyone off the horse and, as I said at the time, I thought it was a brilliant ride.

Christian Howarth - Flat; tidy apprentice, claims 7; has 2 rides at Chelmsford tonight & certainly worth watching in future.

2 wins from 3 rides since I penned this & has a bright chance on Almodovar Del Rio (7.30W) for his stable tonight. 6/1 B365.
