John McGahern, one of the best writers of this or any other era, passed away yesterday. He was one of my favourites and I shall miss him.
That They May Face The Rising Sun is a beautiful portrait of the community in which he lived as a writer and small farmer in Co. Leitrim. He wrote many other fine novels such as The Dark, The Barracks and The Pornographer and his recently published Memoir, which I haven't yet read, has been reviewed very favourably.
