I’ve been off-piste for a while, but the jumpers are warming up and who could resist :)

Harry Derham has had a great start and I think he will hit the high spots, although he might find it a bit more difficult this year as the handicapper gets to grips with his horses after their successes. One of interest is Givemefive who was given a flat outing recently at Haydock as a tune up for later.

Harry said: “He did really well for us in the spring and then he actually came back from Fairyhouse quite sick so we left him off after that. He’s had a nice summer, he did very well out in the field and he’s taken an awful lot of getting fit. The main objective at the start of this season is Cheltenham for a four year old hurdle in a month’s time, so it was always my plan to have a race before that. He will obviously be absolutely trying his best today but this is a race that will very much bring him on fitness wise and I would expect a fair amount of improvement. Hopefully he can still run a really nice race and be competitive but it’s clear that he’s a much better jumper than he is flat horse. As I say I hope he can run a nice race, improve for it and go to Cheltenham all guns blazing in a months time.”

He did run a decent race into second and it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on in the planned race at Cheltenham later this month.

Irecall him saying "Paul Nicholls (his Uncle) is second to none when placing his horses",
Seems he learned well

Aye, almost missed it as well - just getting back in the swing after being away for a couple of weeks - since I had no need (I thought) to put it in the tracker as I keep an eye on all his runners. Caught up just a few minutes before the off - I wouldn’t have been pleased otherwise.

In the 1:10 at Cheltenham on Saturday Lord of Thunder was going very easily and jumping well before he came a cropper when starting his challenge two out. It looked a nasty fall, but I’m told he’s ok (as is Brendan Powell), so I hope he can put it behind him. Good potential, I think.

Can I put Traprain Law up as a horse to follow.

He does need cut in the going, definitely soft, maybe even good to soft.

Now I know it was only a Class4 maiden, but I thought The New Lion looked a bit special at Chepstow today. Graded races will be on the agenda? The £250,000 Belliano in second didn’t look too shabby, either, seeing off the rest despite running green.

Hititi First time over fences last week off 127 at Chepstow...his mark is higher over timber. He was up against much more experiences chasers in general here and the trip 2m3 was maybe short of what his optimum will be so I thought he ran really well. I also think Robert Walford is an underrated handler.
