Jumpers to Note 2024/25

Dunnet Head was on his handicap debut today at Kelso. On rotten ground and with a lot of fences to jump he was ridden very patiently in the rear. Loomed into challenging position when pecked on landing two out and that finished his race and he was just brought home gently.

Alexei runs Taunton 1.35 Thursday. Not much of a price but he couldn’t have won easier last time despite it being a poor race. Spoke to Tom Malone (bloodstock agent who bought him from Germany for Brocade Racing) a couple of weeks ago and he confirmed that he’s potentially very useful and could well be a group horse by end of the season.

You've made me have a quick look at that race, jinnyj.

I reckon Pigeon House sets a fair standard (OR 133) for a Taunton novice hurdle and at 12/1 compared with 6/5 your fella have backed it ew.

I did consider him for my tracker I think he jumped well in the main.

I liked Fire Flyer for Nicholls at Exeter last Friday. Quite a big chaser and for some reason I always think these types aren't really suited to that track. He didn't have the speed of the winner but should win a handicap over further.

I wasn’t wrong......😉

A quiet one that escaped me due to my lurgy:
No Drama This End - won the bumper at Warwick today. I saw him win his point to point at Badbury RIngs last year and he had the Wow factor as soon as he walked into the paddock. He won very impressively that day he (trained and ridden by Will Biddick) and he was promptly bought by Paul Nicholls. To say he's nice is an understatement! Sounds like his trainer is pretty keen on him too!

RTV paddock expert said he looked very weak.
Well if their PE is anything like the ITV one, I’d ignore! He’s only four(well technically five as of today) but he’s got a serious engine.

Rather liked Our Boy Stan who finished second on debut in the bumper today at Cheltenham to a Henrietta Knight horse (how on earth did that go off 16-1 when it had already run with promise on its previous start?). Anyway OBS is a nice type who’s very well related (dam won five times) and although running green, he stayed on well. Think he will have learnt a lot and I look forward to him over hurdles. Trained by Ben Pauling.

What a beautiful ride Nico gave the youngster Lulamba..timed it perfectly with TLC young horse will learn bundles from that..only wish I had backed it lol

Agree - big shout in the Triumph for me now although I imagine he's now fav after that?

My lovely El Elefante from last year has just strolled in up at Ayr - a nice round of jumping from a mare clearly enjoying herself.

A couple of the more recent:

Mondo Man

This is a horse that finished fifth in the Group1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, then fourth in the Group2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, then finished his flat career with seventh in the Group1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamps only to be gelded and turn his attention to hurdles.

The Moores have no doubts over his ability (he has an entry in the Triumph) and Henderson’s Lulamba held no fears for them. They expected him to win at Ascot. As it turned out, he pulled hard and wouldn’t settle, lost position when not so fluent two out and eventually finished just over three lengths down. Nonetheless, it seems fair to say that Lulamba’s performance must have justified the talk and he is probably a worthy Triumph favourite, whilst Mondo Man must be one to watch closely.

Belfrina

She had moved about a length in front of Matwana when she fell at the last with the rest miles behind on her second hurdle run at Doncaster in December. They met again next time on the same terms in a Listed race, again at Doncaster, when she moved past Matwana half a furlong out, and had to work hard to hold it. Again the rest were miles away. Seemingly, she showed no ill effects from what was a nasty fall before. They are a couple of hot juvenile fillies, but I think Belfrina will hold sway now.

Lord Of Thunder

He had been going very easily and had just begun to challenge from around third when he fell two out in a Class3 Novice Handicap Chase at Cheltenham, he followed that with a slightly disappointing run into fourth behind Lowry’s Bar in a Class3 Handicap Chase at Exeter.

Last time he was jumped up to a Grade2 Novice Chase at Ffos Las where he was one of the 16/1 outsiders in a six runner race. He was held up in last place and badly hampered by a faller at the seventh fence, almost shipping Brendan Powell and losing momentum, he gradually recovered and had moved into second place behind Handstands when the rest of the field fell three out. It was mayhem and it looked as though he was a lucky second because everything else had bitten the dust - not so, he was already second and it was a good run on his part which earned his best Chase RPR to date.

Salver

Third when he fell at the last a couple of lengths down on Lucky Place in the Grade2 Relkeel at Cheltenham, he then appeared in a Class2 at Windsor, racing in the lead only to be run down by half a length by the favourite Nemean Lion after a prolonged battle on the run-in with the rest over four lengths away. He’s only five, competed at level weights and earned a personal best RPR 152, so I think he will really make his presence felt at this level and higher.

Tripoli Flyer must go on the list. What a lovely attitude he has. Cheltenham may come a bit early for him but you can't knock him on today's win.

Also very impressed by Mambonumberfive - one for the future as well.

And he wins the last today at Kempton rounding off a nice four timer for me (Saint Anapolino, Rubaud, Tripoli Flyer and OBS) - only 50p but tops up the account a little.

Irish Chorus - 11/10 favourite, miles ahead and coasting when crumpled on landing over the last at Doncaster yesterday.

One or two from Cheltenham:

In the Grand Annual JPR One raced on the heels of the leading half dozen and moved up to put himself bang there approaching the second last. Unfortunately he stumbled badly on landing and that put paid to his chances. I like to think he would have featured otherwise.

I ought to mention Primoz in this race. He was a steamer in the market and had himself positioned for a prominent role, but it was a false start. He took some time to return to the standing start and had barely turned round to face the right way when the starter let them go. His chance ended before it had started and he never featured.

In the Kim Muir Johnnywho was a bit unlucky in second. Miles in front of the third, the distance was maybe a tad far and he was clumsy at the last which wouldn’t have helped, nor would losing two shoes.

Hasthing was running an excellent race in the NH Challenge Cup and was in third place (thanks to a couple of fallers) when he came down at the last. Wouldn’t have done better than third, but it was a good performance on ground not as soft as he likes.

In the Golden Miller there had been plenty of money coming for Caldwell Potter so perhaps his win wasn’t the surprise that it seemed. This distance, or further, seems right for him so we can probably look forward to more .

And a few more:

Wodhooh won the Martin Pipe easily despite an eleven pounds hike in the weights for beating Joyeuse earlier. She’ll probably have to move into Graded territory now and I think she’ll cope fine.

There was a lot of late money for Jagwar in the TrustATrader and he rewarded his backers with a strong performance, winning going away with his ears pricked. More to come there, I think.

Fact To File put up an extremely strong performance in the Ryanair and Willie Mullins’ comments are interesting.

QUOTES: They went a good gallop, FACT TO FILE stayed with them and got all his jumping right, and off the bend, I don't think Mark was worried; he just had to get over the last two fences and he did that well. The manner of the way in which he won was a bit of a surprise, but I felt coming here he'd win it. But the others were good horses, anyone would love to have them. I do agree that he might have been the horse to give Galopin Des Champs a battle in the Gold Cup and he was in it, but he felt it was better to bide our options. He'll probably be a Gold Cup horse next year. He'll be a year older and we felt that at this stage a hard race in the Gold Cup, if the ground turned up soft... It's not like that, but that was the way I was thinking all season. JP [McManus] didn't want him to have a very hard race in the Gold Cup this year - sometimes that can ruin a horse's career. So next year - I'm not going to say any more about two-year plans after Lossiemouth, but another year might be right. I think that's what we're looking at - Willie Mullins, trainer.

In the Triumph Lulamba got the better of East India Dock only to go down to the 100/1 debutant. Nonetheless they were easily the best of the rest, so facing a bright future, I think. I doubt Poniros will see 100/1 again!

The New Lion - A bit obvious, but I thought this was a really strong race for him to win. Bodes well.
