King George

Can’t take O’Brien’s word as gospel as we all know but he was saying this week that he’s got Japan spot on for today and his two previous runs were set up for today. To run like he did I’d have to assume it’s a ‘bad day’ run worth forgiving. Still couldn’t fancy him over Enable in any race though.

I sometimes wonder if trainers - even the greats - sometimes get it wrong and overtrain them ahead of a big target, leaving their race behind on the gallops.

Then again, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Japan was there as a decoy for Sovereign whom they hoped would be left alone out in front as he was in the Irish Derby.

No doubt the sectionals will be analysed here and there over the next few days and I look forward to seeing what they reveal.

Doubt the time was all that? They went quite slowly down the hill for the first 1/3rd of the race, and someone (on ITV) mentioned how quick Enable's sectionals were for the finish. That doesn't happen in strongly run races.
For mine, RM knew all was not well with Japan, possibly before the race, too.

I doesnt matter what itv "expert" said. The clock shows what happened, they went too fast, Enable finish behind 100% finishing speed.

The clock showed (from the sectionals you were so keen to promote :)) they went slow early and Enable went quick late, more or less precisely as I'd caled it earlier.

It's high time TV coverage had super-imposed markers showing sectional par pace, moving along through the race in the same way that TV coverage of swimming does, at least in the replays.

There was a race the other day at York (Elarqam's, maybe?) which I watched, genuinely curious about the pace. Elarqam got to the front but didn't appear to stretch on, keeping only just ahead, with the pack in close attendance. At the top of the straight they appeared to start to make their moves and I half-expected to see Elarqam stay in front at least until late on but he, then the rest of the pressers, started being overhauled by those coming from the back, and even the doubtful stayer Lord Glitters ran past them for second place.

I didn't have a bet in the race so wasn't focused on any one horse but halfway up the straight I was concluding that they must have gone fast as a pack and folded like a poor poker hand late.

A super-imposed marker on the race would have helped read it. The technology obviously exists and, while I accept there will be other complications applying it to different tracks and goings to ally to the expense, the importance of sectional timings is gathering momentum so why not at least set up a feasibility study of some sort.

(We know the answer, of course - bookmakers run sport for their own ends, unlike swimming.)

Just a thought, but the presumption by TV race readers that a pace is slow because there are few runners or because they race as a pack is just plain lazy.

Check out the sectionals:
1st 4f Sovereign - av spd (incl standing start) 12.15 spf ....... hardly lung bursting for a downhiil run on quick ground. (It states early pace slow in top LH corner)
Last 4f Enable - av spd 12.67spf........ not the figures of a knackered horse at the end of a stiff 12f.
