Ladbrokes (Hennessey) Trophy – Newbury 30 Nov

This race has lost a bit of prestige looking at recent entries

It's not merely a sponsor change either

My solution - Incorporate it into a race series incorporating one big other 3m race in the UK/Ireland and also the Gold Cup

Would be brilliant to see some of the higher end chasers dip their toes in the handicap waters

Agree with this.
Could you imagine Denman running in this now? Not in a million years. I remember Smad Place winning this by a country mile, to only then finish about 7th in the Gold Cup. It’s a shame it doesn’t get the proper grade 1 horses it used to.

Bob's Worth and Native River have both won this in the last 7 years and both won the Gold Cup?
Chuck in Many Clouds too.

I just don’t think it’s the attraction it once was. I remember when Native River won this, I couldn’t have him winning a Gold Cup (obviously wrong)

I can safely say, whoever wins this, won’t finish top 5 Gold Cup, that’s even if they run in it.

Topofthegame was being targeted at this. Used to love the race, but wouldn't be one I'd be getting too involved in nowadays.

I would favour this option over the Troytown for Discorama.

He'll have close to top weight in Navan, an extra two furlongs and a nicer racing weight in Newbury.

Ground probably the dictating factor.

This years renewal should offer some good betting opportunites.

I have done some early form study and found something at 40/1 that I reckon should be half the price.

I will post it up in due course.

My first bet, not studied yet, but Yorkhill at 50s with Paddy Power. In a year of comebacks for Mullins horses so far, I’ve had a small bet on the enigma himself, Yorkhill.

I'm not totally convinced he enjoys a lh track but On The Blind Side was very eye catching in the race Vinndication won at Ascot. Taken 20s

That's the Henderson horse isn't it.

I poured through a few form lines last night and Michael Scudamore's Some Chaos caught my eye as a second season chaser in waiting. You can forgive and forget the last run in a novice hurdle on heavy ground.

Last season he did nothing but improve over fences with a strike rate of 4/6 (or 66 percent in percentage terms), in class fours, three's and one class two. His form tells me he is a 150+ chaser this season racing on a mark of 145.

If he made it on the day at Newbury he could easily start a lot shorter than the current 40/1 with Betfred and a few others.

So yeah, Some Chaos for me. A strong fancy at the respective odds.

40/1 looks like an anti-post price which is what you'd expect just under two weeks before the race..

Kildisart for me. If any of these are Gold Cup material, it's him. Was mightily impressed with him at Aintree.

Me too. Easy to forgive his run at Carlisle as Ben Pauling had been very clear he’d need the run

Kapcorse 25/1 for me. His win In the Sir Peter O'Sullevan Chase on this card last year, over 2m6f looks very good when you consider the exploits of the 2nd & 3rd that day. (Brelan D'As & The Bay Birch). I think he was laid out for this race by connections after that win. They ran him over hurdles in his next two races, imo, to protect his mark. If he gets In off (141)? He should, as there hasn't been a max field for many a year, then he would be one of the bottom weights. Could be well handicapped?

He's a big old fella and they think a lot of him. I really fancied him for the Pertemps but he knocked himself in the qualifier at Chepstow. He gave Brelan D'as a good beating who's run with great credit at Cheltenham since, but is prone to throwing in the odd shocker.

I can't see me being able to study the race this year but will probably have a bet on the day.

I'll always be looking for a potential Gold Cup horse in the race and Henderson usually has at least one such candidate primed on the day. I'll probably have something on whichever NdB rides.

Yorkhill is intriguing.

Cloth Cap was a big fancy of mine for the Scottish National (as potentially better than a handicapper) and is entitled to improve again for the summer off.

No bets until the day, though.
