Detectives downplay lotto kidnap threat

By Jimmy Woulfe, Mid-West Correspondent
LIMERICK gardaí remained tightlipped yesterday on reports that a son of Euro jackpot winner, Dolores McNamara fled the city because of a kidnap threat.

The newspaper report stated that Mrs McNamara’s eldest son, Gary, his partner and their child had left their home in Castletroy for an unknown address.

It is believed that since her win, gardaí have advised Mrs McNamara and her family on the kind of profile they should maintain and this advice is upgraded on an ongoing basis.

It is believed that after a regular contact with gardaí earlier this week, Gary McNamara decided to move out of his residence in Castletroy. But a senior garda source said that to say he fled the city was overstating the move.

While Mrs McNamara has a family connection with a person linked to the city’s ongoing feud, she has no involvement with any of those involved.

It is believed gardaí conveyed “certain information” to the McNamara family in recent days.

Since her win, Mrs McNamara has kept a low profile and is understood to travel abroad frequently with friends.

She has installed CCTV security cameras at her modest bungalow home in St Patrick’s Road.

Mrs McNamara won a record €115m on July 29.

Coincidentally, I was thinking of her today, and wondering how she was managing, given what you'd implied might be the unwholesome scenario following her win, An. Poor souls - it sounds like they'll become permanently nomadic now. But, hey, any time they want to stay incognito in Brighton at a very modest £23.50 per night B&B, they'll be most welcome.

This is off no relevance to the thread but the bird (ex-schoolgirl) is doing nursing (uniform!) in Limerick and is staying in Castletroy.......

That woman would have been better off winning half a million. She will be hounded by the Irish tabloids for the next ten years and you can be sure her children will be targeted by unsavoury elements.

Here's one answer - you hire a helicopter and announce it's flying over the city between 9.00 and 10.00 a.m. on a certain day, and dropping £70,000,000 in loose notes...

From today's Irish Independent:

Anthony 'Noddy' McCarthy: Serving life for gangland killing

A NEPHEW of Euromillions winner Dolores McNamara has hired Saddam Hussein's lawyer to get him off his life sentence for murder.

The Irish Independent has learned that Anthony 'Noddy' McCarthy (22) has called in Italian-born Giovanni Di Stefano (51).

Known as the 'Devil's advocate' di Stefano's client list reads like a who's who of some of the world's worst criminals.

And he will not come "cheap" his office confirmed yesterday.

A secretary said that McCarthy is not entitled to legal aid for the appeal.

McCarthy is currently serving a life sentence for the gangland murder of Kieran Keane.

A close relative of the €115m winner shouted to gardai the morning after she scooped the jackpot they would "buy Noddy out of jail".

But Ms McNamara is said to have been disgusted by Keane's murder and is adamant her money will not be used to fund any appeal.

McCarthy has now changed his former legal aid defence team of Madden & Finucane solicitors in Belfast for the controversial Italian.

Di Stefano's London office confirmed yesterday it will be taking over McCarthy's case when the appeal is listed for mention on November 4.

The Italian will be the third solicitor McCarthy has engaged to fight the murder charge. His trial solicitor was Aneas McCarthy, now a judge of the District Court.

His appeal was taken up by Madden & Finucane solicitors.

Di Stefano is also going to handle the appeal of McCarthy's co-accused Dessie Dundon, who is not related to the lottery winner.

Dundon, a first cousin and best friend of McCarthy's, was previously represented by Dublin based solicitor Gareth Sheehan.

It also emerged recently that Di Stefano has been engaged by drugs baron John Gilligan to handle his appeal, as well as by drug runner Patrick "Dutchy" Holland.

He also recently engaged the services of QC Jerome Lynch and Trevor Burke to handle McCarthy's and Dundon's case for him.

They have also retained the services of an Irish barrister. Both QCs are amongst the top criminal law experts in the UK and are thought to earn in excess of €1m each per year.

McCarthy and Dundon were convicted in the Central Criminal Court in December 2003 along with three others after a four-week trial for the murder of Kieran Keane on January 29, 2003.

Keane was lured into a trap by McCarthy and Dundon, who telephoned him and asked him to come to a house in the Fairgreen, Garryowen.

He arrived with his nephew Owen Treacy and later that night they were taken in a van to Drombana, around two miles outside the city, and Keane was shot dead with a single round to the back of the head. Treacy was stabbed around 17 times and left for dead.

Look, really, one expects a better quality of hit than those. A chap is stabbed 17-odd times and 'left for dead'? The other is popped with a single shot? I know who's getting paid, and who's getting a damn good smacking for that bumble. Is there absolutely NO area of competence to be had these days?

Excellent point Krizon. Actually, if you find a cheap flight you should come over to O Malley Park in Limerick and let them know how you feel.

I'll pay.

Looking back a year later I am embarrassed by my smug patronising tone regarding this woman and her life. Since she won all that money she has been unheard off. No sign of 'look at me' at all.

Anyway - she bought a bumper horse for her husband - and he goes in the last at Wexford today - Carraig na gCapall. She looks to have a decent chance in a very ordinary race. Best of luck Dolores.

An Capall's gone red in the face
His comments have caused him disgrace
He should have known better
Than to think her a jet-setter
Now he's backing her nag in a race.

Old Dessie was quick on the draw
To scrape on a nerve that is raw
But to joke about money
In Scotland's not funny,
As her win it still sticks in his craw.

You're trying to tell me you've nerves?
When you show off your swirls and your swerves
On the dance floor you're a raver
Like Travolta in 'Fever'
And you pull all the grans you deserves.

I had good word for Phillip Fenton's in that race but did nothing because I'm tired of following money in that stable. Anyway before the race I got a slip warning. There was a €100 four timer going on him at 3/1, worth €17k! Plus we also had €3k of liabilites from singles. So a pxy bumper in Wexford, not even covered by the main SIS could have cost the shop €20K....
