I find the scale of punishments in this case hard to take in. €50k “contribution towards IHRB costs” for Ronan McNally, plus being stripped of roughly the same amount in prize money on top of being DQD for 12 years.

This is out of scale with any previous punishments I can recall in Irish racing. And without more detail it’s even harder to understand the 5 year ban on Ciarán Fennessy for discussing the McNally horses with his brother and father, who live in the same house with him.

When you look at our local Irish saint bedecked in green and gold, and the bookie owners and retainers in the inner sanctums of Coolmore and Closutton, I think there is a big whiff of hypocrisy about this case.

Reminds me of Davids Lad /A J Martin banned for 42 days after his Grand National prep race, a 2 mile chase at Naas.
Given the horse was found distressed after his previous race and the race was 2 miles it also seemed ott, especially given how well the horse had run at Aintree the previous year.
The Moore family did that for years with no penalty .
Times they are just out to get you.
I imagine McNally went to the well too often with horses that were too good to start with.

More of it...didn't Joseph train horses under Aidan's name before he got his licence. I remember a very small trainer being crucified for a similar instance. McNally being made an example of

Don't know enough of the detail (and not massively interested in it, truth be told), but 12 years seems a bit harsh no matter what the transgression.

Agree Art. Seems like a murder sentence for breaking and entering.

€63,000 are they mad? I could build a 3 bedroom house for that in Thailand plus he gets a 12 years ban. Who did he murder:blink:?

Must have really had it in for the guy and I think I read they were searching through races after the fact to try and nail him.

Really though the sentence is absolutely nuts. Compare it to a guy from Surrey last months

Caught selling Class A drugs which do kill. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined £190. and he could be back on the streets in just over a year.

I watched a couple of the races they ran in pior to them winning and no way could you say they were non triers/stopped.

However with the sudden improvement you can be 90% sure they were sent racing 5 canters short of a gallop until they were wanted and then and only then they were 100% fit.

However 90% sure would mean he would walk in a court of law but I assume racing doesn't answer to the courts they are a law unto themselves.

Ok he cheated there's little doubt about that but whether one agrees with them having the power of a kangaroo court is another debate altogether.

On appeal it will be reduced greatly and I am sure they realise this too

If the intention was to send out a message, it has caught people's attention

If people feel it will prevent some of the altruistic souls referenced by Art in post 1, very unlikely

Mr B.McMahon will have to take notice of this after his Four country roads won the other day.
His explanation for the improvement was "noted".
After it won off 69 its form was pu,9/13,pu,8/12,pu and was backed from 33/1 into 12/1 and got up on the line to win.
Jockey got 4 days for over use of the whip.
