Melbourne Cup

Soulcombe also lost ground out of the gates but I don't suppose it really matters to you, trudij :D

Great punting! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Soulcombe would have pissed up in the Ebor off 97 if they'd kept him here.

This is a problem that's not going away. The winner was a 113 horse here. He should be running in the Ascot Gold Cup next year.

Great shout tan, won easy.

Can't agree about Vauban, though. The principals have come from the back and the leaders have bombed late. This all points to the pace being too fast and Vauban was never far off it. Backers of Absurde can probably count themselves unlucky not to get a place since he was also in the front third and hit the front too early in the straight.

It looks like adrenaline has had a major say in the race with too many jockeys getting the fractions wrong.

Just my initial take.

Cheers Dessie but I stand by my theory about high class 2 mile hurdlers,

Even 3 times CH winner Istabraq failed 3 times to win at 2 miles. Sea Pigeon who couldn't get the trip in the Champion Hurdle before they changed the course won the Chester Cup but that was 2m2f
Persian War was tried in the Newbury Autumn Cup despite looking a class apart was a well beaten 4th.

Check out the Goodwood Cup,Lonsdale Cup and the Northumberland Plate and only Overturn manage to win the latter. why would the Melbourne cup be any different.

Footnote: Not for one minute do I believe Willie Mullins had a say in Vauban running. He didn't even want to run him in the Triumph but Rich Ricci insisted and he also was quoted as saying he wanted to go for the Melbourne cup a race HE always wanted to win

I wasn't disagreeing, Tanlic, at least not intentionally.

It was in my mind that the Melbourne Cup tends to be won by horses that are bred for 12f rather than strong stayers*. That said, I reckon you needed a stayer to win the race the other day, given the madness of the pace.

(*That could also be totally wrong to start with!)

Sea Pigeon won the Ebor carrying 10 stone at the age of 9......

Twice round a flat 1m circuit, generally on ground we'd label firm, is hardly a proper test for our genuine 2 milers,is it?

Vintage Crop a Cesarewitch winner won the race but then he was different class to Vauban.

I honestly think Vauban is overrated and then some.
