Due to announce his retirement shortly.

Great time for him to do it, Sea The Stars capped a fantastic career but he really has been a shadow of his former self for some time now.

he has loads of land apparantly so i would think plans may have been laid in the past couple of years (Im not a flattie though!)

He was the first Irish jockey to become an international success while remaining in Ireland, which now seems amazing.

Seldom overcomplicated in his tactics, he made relatively few mistakes, was strong in a finish and was every bit as good as his record suggests. Had he moved abroad big race successes would have come to him sooner. He was already into his thirties when the likes of Cecil and Stoute came calling.

I'd imagine he will look more at the breeding than the training side of things.

The best of luck to him, he'll be missed.

P.S. Fran Berry to be next year's champion, or will John Oxx look elsewhere for a No. 1?

You see, I would have said something like...

"Mick's probably not been at his best lately, but the fact he could keep Sea The Stars unbeaten in his 3 yo career was a mark of a true professional"!

Don't be soooo downbeat for gawds sake...

Still remember as a 16 year old at Epson after he won on Galileo I shouted "well done Mick" as he walked back, and a smile I got back!

I've had him as a negative for years. He did his best to get STS beat at York, don't forget.

On the up side, he has had a long and largely succesful career and anyone who gets to that stage deserves a long, happy and healthy retirement. (Unless they're a tax-cheating b*start.)

I think he did it very well last year.

As a whole career, one of the best jockeys I have seen, many good rides in big races and always a serious and professional jockey.

Great to see him bow out at the top after what was already one hell of a career.

I'm sure he'll spend his time putting some more of those stallion nominations he's been racking up over the years to good use!

I think it has actually been announced now.

One of the best horsemen that was also a jockey. Great hands. Great with young horses. There have been few better and he has ridden some of the real great ones.

many good rides ,
the one I most remember was him on Montjeu winning the Arc, very few jockeys would have won that race from that possition

Berry confirmed as stable jockey. Terrible decision in my opinion, think he's going to be a liability at the top level. His ride on Mourayan was one of the worst rides of the 2009 season, 7lb claimers would have done better.

I totally agree, his wits seem to go missing intermittently.

The first time I realised how good Kinane was when I saw him get a horse called family tradition up at Leop to win by a neck in a deluge from a seemingly unwinable position. Can still see it like it was yesterday.

My favourite Kinane ride was aboad Grand Lodge in the 94 St James Palace. They outmuscled Eddery and Distant View by a head. He was so strong that day.
