He hadn't really crossed my radar, I don't watch the Dubai racing, until seeing him at Ayr this week.

Struck me as being very, very tidy, not sure how strong he is in a finish but is a rider I'll be watching in future.

Fair enough, Rory...............my ignorance I'm afraid.
No slight intended Colin - he won the Derby Italiano on Rakti in 2002, although it's fair to say that horse taught him plenty in more negative ways, as when he picked up a ban for striking him when he wouldn't go into the stalls for the Champion Stakes that year.

At least he's had the decency to admit what a prick he's made of himself and apologised.

Terrible error but doesn't detract from how well he's been riding over here this year.

Weirdly, he's not the first to do that at Wolves. Liam Jones did it once and a couple of apprentices/amateurs have done it on that track too.

He was getting the stick because he wasn't giving his horses enough of it?

Not necessarily the number of strikes, just not animated enough. Mainland European jocks tend to ride with their irons higher and focus more on getting the horse balanced and in a rhythm as opposed to the all action style of a typical UK jockey.

Agree with Gamla though that (usually) he is a good jock with a decent racing brain.

Talking through my pocket, I thought his ride on Es Que Love last Saturday left plenty to be desired. Quickly away against the stands' side rail, the horse was allowed to drift away from the rail and raced on his own away from the others. Es Que Love was well clear 2f out but beginning to tread water from 1f out. The final furlong was a jockey's masterclass in stylishly switching the whip from one hand to the other - left to right to left to right - but he didn't actually get round to using it until one weakish crack about 20 yards from the line by which time it was clear a finisher along the stands' side rail was just going to collar him. I'm not saying he'd definitely have won with another crack or two but I wouldn't have minded finding out.

Looks a bit high in the weights now, Colin. I intend to continue to follow Irish Heartbeat over the proverbial cliff.

All of which makes Es Que Love a certainty, I suppose.
