Mobile phone directory

Mrussell - see thread called Mobile Phone Directory. Apparently so if it is registered. There are ways round that though.

Yes, I saw that, G-G, after I'd created a new thread (not the 1st time, either!)
Unfortunately, I don't know how to delete the 1 & only item in a thread, else I would have.

This will be yet another data-base ready to be left lying in a CD on a 22 bus, then!

My sister found a message from a number she didn't know, answered it and switched off immediately because it was some firm saying "you have won ..." at which point she switched off. She was really hacked off when she found that just by responding she had copped for 5.00.

A directory is going to open everyone up to a scam like this.

It could lead to a lot of those kind of incidents. Do the mobile companies have leave to give your information in the instance? If I receive a call from a number I don't know, I let it go through to voicemail. If it is 'genuine', they will leave a message.

They did leave a message, GG and even though she hung up after a couple of seconds, they still managed to get a fiver.

Mobile phone directory - next week

I've received an e-mail this evening from our raceday supervisor, who runs his own security company, and is also a BHA security official, so ought to know about this. He says that next week, a mobile phone directory will be created, in spite of whatever your contract might say with your provider, and in spite of 118 800 protesting otherwise. If you don't opt out, you'll most likely be listed and potentially able to receive any amount of unsolicited texts and messages - and so will any kids you have or know, which mightn't be too smart.

If you want to ensure your phone isn't listed, go to www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove-me.html and then to 'Home' and follow the instructions (bypassing the page where you're informed you'll never be put into a directory) to keep yourself unlisted. You'll be texted back within seconds with a 5-digit number to add to the site, and then you will not be listed. It's so easy, even I've managed it!

Please pass this info to any friends and family who feel they might benefit from knowing about it. I'm assuming there won't be any listing of mobis outside the UK, so Irish and other non-UK users probably aren't affected.

My mobile phone number has been put in the on-line directory here in Belgium without my knowledge. I have asked to be removed from it but so far there has been no response.

Meanwhile I've received a few calls from people trying to sell stuff. So far they've been representing legitimate businesses, though, or at least purporting to. I hadn't copped the possibility of being done for a premium rate by some chancer, though.
