. Many, many years ago I was playing the “big man” to impress my to be wife and suggested she went to look at the horses while I got some “serious money” down. When I joined her she pointed out a bedraggled looking affair and said “I hope you didn’t back that one”. Gulp! I had, of course, I think she took pity on me (which worked out well!), but she wasn’t to know that “serious money” was a tad exaggerated.

After watching horses for 60 years I can tell you which is the front and which is the rear.
They all look fit and well to me.

I make most of my money on antepost. My biggest returns coming from playing the Cheltenham Festival for 12 months a year. I'm happy to tie up funds because I regard returns as a dividend.

Shorter term I play antepost on any race where I can part make a book with horses I am reasonably confident will turn up in a race.

For both of the above I use the exchange to lock in profits. Antepost has always been the place for me to find the best value. It takes a fair amount of effort to stay on top of racing plans, to follow trainer race-planning, find out about setbacks or injuries, etc, but I find it's time well spent. The bookies are definitely getting tighter with antepost pricing, but there's still very good money to be made through antepost singles and multiples.

Week to week I rely on my own judgement, and focus on a narrow selection of races, and have a few trusted people and sources I rely on, which keeps the accounts healthy. I'll often use these kinds of bets to roll-up onto other antepost horses too.

I also like playing each way multiples with the aim of the place part making my profit. When I land the win parts I regard it as a bonus, because they're usually very nice when they do.

Watching and going racing is a leisure activity for me, but I only bet to make money. I don't bet for betting's sake, so I'm very disciplined in how I go about it, including keeping record of all my bets, and P&L by bet type and category.

Being naturally nosey I'm interested in how people decide on horses worth a bet.

I'm not expecting anyone to give away any secrets or to tell us of any "edge" that they have discovered, just their general way of working.

Do you trawl through the form book checking going, distance etc. of possible selections previous runs, or follow trainers habits?

Do you watch lots of racing and make a note of unlucky losers?

Do you follow any favourite tipsters?

Or do you use a similar approach to me, which is to allocate a numerical value to the various actions of each horses previous performances?
That is to say, position in last 3 races, course or distance winner, days since last run, forecast price etc.

I go by the betting - that's it! I've used my (losing:lol system for well over 40 years.......
That's also one reason why I never put a horse up
