Mp3 Players

I have had an IPod Nano for about 7 months now - does the job u know, plays music, shuffle songs etc...does it justify the price?? Im not so sure...cost about 170odd and the hard drive wasnt even that big.

I think its overrated, it does look good, battery life is terrible and updating or adding new songs can take awhile as well.

If I had the choice again, I probably would have bought a different mp 3 player.

I have a Sony NW-A1000 on which I have stuck 3000 songs, with room for another 1000 or so. It doesn't have video. It cost £140, I think.

Depending on the stereo you are playing CD's through, an MP3 could prove to have better sound quality. (It certainly does on mine)

The headphones are fine.

The software is fine.

ipod for appearances, creative vision M for the best allround package. I'd recommend using the vision m as your starting point, and seeing if any of the ipods or irivers beat it.

Hmmm... much food for thought - thanks all. I too am a Radio4 addict, so maybe that should influence my choice - am often still out in the yard when I want to listen to the news and, of course, The Archers. Yes, I know I can listen to them any old time and I often do listen on my PC when working but it would still be good to have the radio facility.

Before you buy an MP3 it's well worth looking on the Dixons website first. They offer pretty good discounts if you order on the web, on ipods in particular. I've found the best deals to be had are at the tax free outlets at the airport if you're flying anywhere soon. I'm not so sure that it can be done but a coleague tells me that you can order an ipod from Dixons online, taking advantage of the discount, and have it delivered to the airport to be picked up. He claims that way you can get the VAT knocked off also - although that could be for overseas residents, I'm not sure.

My son has hinted that he would like a decent set of headphones for his Creative player for Christmas. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference even if I was allowed to try. Any suggestions?

Ummmmm... :shy: what's the difference between an MP3 player and an iPod, then? I wouldn't mind something that played the tunes I liked, as the car's only got a radio/cassette deck, and the latter is now buggered after only three years' very light use. The radio goes on and off on trips where reception is erratic, so something I could listen to without furtling around with controls would be nice. But what are they? Is an iPod the headphone thingy which sees people walking around in trancelike states, falling down open manholes?

Now that's what I don't like... ;)

They are both the same, an iPod is an MP3 player, but an MP3 player is not always an iPod.

Like, a steeplechaser is always a horse, but a horse is not always a steeplechaser? Right, that's immensely helpful, Ali!

MP3 players are a type of music or video player, Jon. iPod is a brand name of a particular MP3 player.

I was bought an iPod when I didn't particularly want one but:
1) It's better than a CD player in the gym because the vibration from the treadmill doesn't effect it like it did my CD player
2) I only have a non high speed USB port on my PC (my PC is 5 years old), so I keep getting messages telling me this <_<
3) iTunes is very good but distinctly lacking in some areas of music
4) The battery takes ages to charge
5) The battery only lasts about two and a half hours (?)
6) The controls are hyper sensitive
7) It turns itself on for no reason, when it hasn't been touched and has the 'hold' button on (?)
8) The volume of tracks downloaded seems to vary enormously and I can't work out why? (can be too quiet to just right to ear shattering from track to track)
9) It has made me realise what a very small CD collection I have :(
10) It has made me realise that I only really like a very small selection of music! :(

I like these little yellow things :shy:

Bose do a brilliant wireless pair Laurence but I think they are very dear they have been advertising in the TELEGRAPH and yes you guessed it mine all went out in the rubbish yesterday......................

LOOKEE HERE...................

Ah, I see now, Pee. Thanks for that. I'm sure they're far too complicated for me, especially if you have to download stuff and deal with dumb websites. I've just had six goes at trying to buy Norton Security 2007 online, and their stupid site keeps nagging me to enter my Solo or Switch card details. As I don't have, etc., I have a Visa, I can't. I e-mailed them and got the advice to clear all my Cookies and try again - same bloody result. I tried to call their '24 hour' help/orderline but it was constantly engaged, but the canned voice told me to press 5 for Ringback. Which I did. And got the message saying they don't take Ringback. I mean, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be a big technological company, and they don't have Ringback? I know 80 y.o.'s who've got it! And probably a website that actually works, too!

Sorry, a bit off at a tangent, but you get the picture!

Got an e-mail off Symantec this a.m. to say they were sorry for the inconvenience caused, and giving me the phone numbers of various retail outlets from which I could buy the Security 2007 CD. The whole purpose of the exercise was to buy the downloadable version, though!

I have a Samsung YP75 which is cheaper than ipod, holds 1,000 songs and all you do is drag and drop music from 1 folder to another on computer.I really love it.

For pay sites, given that you can't use the iTunes Music Store, try allofmp3.com before they get steamrollered out of existence by the WTO.

While were on subject, anybody know of free download site as I can't get limewire to work anymore?Or even a good pay to download site?
limewire works fine for me

Dug this thread up as I'm about to buy one for myself.

Obviously the playing field has altered somewhat and the bar is quite a bit higher.

Any suggestions, I'm looking for good sound quality and plenty of space.

Thinking iPod Classic at the moment unless someone has a bad experience with one but if there is a must buy out there please speak up.
