My notebook runners

Thursday 31st July

Fortunately I didn’t have a bet yesterday since we were out to lunch and it dragged on a bit. Couldn’t believe the results when we got back - I know “that’s horse racing”, but bloody hell. If I fancy a bet today I might just chuck the names of the runners down the stairs and back the one or two that make it to the hall floor.

Two today at Goodwood: See The Fire - 3:05 - went in the notebook after a comprehensive win in the Group 2 Middleton at York - 15/5 absolutely smashed this lot, must be down for better things - and followed that by running third behind Ombudsman and Anmaatin the Group 1 Prince of Wales at Royal Ascot. She was supplemented for that and fully justified that decision, confirming that she is quite at home at the Group 1 level. At the very least I think she will give Whirl a fright. Drift this morning is off-putting,though.

Uncertainty - 4:55 - quite a promising run into second on her debut - 10/7 ran very green when push came to shove and didn’t have a clear path, but the penny seemed to drop late on and she finished well.- and the market may have something to say.

And a few to watch: High Degree, Super Soldier, Rahiebb and Kaleido.

Friday 1st August

See The Fire
was lengths behind on the flag start (which was the most panicky and amateurish effort by the starter that you could ever hope to see) and although she seemed to travel quite well in the mud she was never put under any serious pressure. I’ll take her again next time. Unfortunately, I’d already had a starter before the deluge, but at least I didn’t add. I was premature in thinking the penny had dropped with Uncertainty and she’ll be another watch before risking any hard-earned. As for the other watchers, High Degree went very well on his handicap debut and can win from that mark. The others didn’t feature and reportedly didn’t like the ground (neither did Merchantwho hated it according to Tom Marquand, but he won in spite of it as the good ones do)

There were four notebooks today, but the going has put paid to them. Me, too.

One notebook in the 5:45 at Yarmouth today which is a race full of unraced unknowns so the market will be informative. Nonetheless I thought Concert looked promising finishing strongly despite being somewhat hampered on the way - 3/7 unconsidered 25/1 of two stablemates (the other at 3/1 finished down the field) Concert finished strongly to go second. I’m sure she’ll go one better. At the moment there’s just the two horses in it and the money has come for Concert - 15/8 now from 11/4 - although the favourite has held steady.

One notebook at Haydock in the 6:50. Respond ran a personal best on ratings last time in a Class 2 at Sandown despite getting stuck on the rail until late on - 14/6 couldn’t get through on the rail a furlong or so out and eventually had to be switched as the winner and eventual third sailed past. He picked up and finished strongly to take the eventual third and move into second, but could do nothing about the winner - This one is Class 3 and none of the others have tackled that yet, let alone Class 2. He’s vying for favouritism with Mukhtalif now after being 2/1 last evening and it looks a two horse race as far as the market is concerned, although there are two unknowns making their debut.

Saturday 9th August

That was nice win by Respond. Finished up 6/5f, added to last nights starter and averaged 13/8. It was quite a decent debut run by Census in third, couldn’t get a run where it mattered and wasn’t knocked about. He’ll do better, I think, although there wasn’t much of any weight behind him.

Two notebooks today, but I’m not convinced about either of them. Haven’t had a starter and will watch the market and wait until nearer the races.

3:40 Newmarket, Midnight Tango first went in the notebook in May after a good run (four lengths behind Dance To The Music who she re-opposes today) in a Class 2 at Newmarket - 17/5 despite being very green and over keen she was thereabouts until fading at the end. Worth another look, she should come on a lot for the run. She delivered next time in a lowly Class 5. Went in the notebook again after her run in the Group 3 Princess Margaret at Ascot where she put in a personal best despite again being over keen - 26/7 looked at home at this level despite being over keen and running out of puff towards the end in fourth. She can do better.Reportedly they are wanting to drop her out this time and the extra furlongs may help, but it looks a tough ask.

2:02 Redcar, Valley Of The Kings 2/8 "I was very confident that Valley Of The Kings would take all the beating first time out over this CD five weeks ago, but he proved very green after a slow start. He's South African-bred, by their good sire Gimmethegreenlight and has been pleasing me again since the run. He'll be much more clued up today. " Dylan Cunha - in the event he came up against one, but beat the rest quite convincingly and should take one ok. Again this looks a tough ask as the favourite could be a class above having joined David O’Meara from Joseph O’Brien and is having his first run for him.

That’s probably my pet hate when your selection beats off the odds-on favourite only for something else to come along and spoil the party. Decent run by Valley Of The Kings, though. Don’t know what to make of Midnight Tango, looked well beaten a furlong out then finished quite strongly.

Wednesday 13th August

Three notebooks today, but likely a fallow day withs odds-ons and Revoir drifting a touch overnight.

3:30 Salisbury, Morris Dancer - after a Class 4 win he was upped to Group 2 at Goodwood and ran a cracker - 29/7 came from last and didn’t get the cleanest of runs, but caught the winner and it looked all over except the winner came again and just took it. Will go on from here, but he won’t be 22/1. The extra furlong should suit, but he’s odds-on.

4:30 Salisbury, Revoir - 17/5 ran a bit green, but ran on well pressing winner all the way. She’s fine at this level. Following that Listed run she was out of her depth in Oaks, although she ran quite respectably and maybe didn’t fully last the distance. In any event I was waiting for lowered sights. Those came in her last race (Listed) at York where she was favourite back at 1m2f and seemingly caught out for pace as push came to shove, finishing 6th. It was an under par run. Not sure she’s worth another chancel, but it’ll only be small if at all.

6:45 Kempton, Pearla - went in the notebook after her debut run - 2/5 2nd/6 raced in the lead and kept on strongly when headed even though she was handled gently. Will come on for it. She couldn’t quite deliver in her next race, but ran well enough to stay in book - 22/5 2nd Pearla, narrowly denied on her debut, couldn't contain a good one inside the last this time, but she'll surely find an opening soon. Odds-on today, though.

Thursday 14th August

A smooth win by Morris Dancer even though he wandered about a bit. Room for more, I think. I was twixt a rock and a hard place, because I don’t take odds-on and fight shy of drifters. Went to 6/4 at one stage, but came back late on to 11/8 then 11/10 which I took. Revoir was hammer and tongs with the winner over the last furlong and went down by a head. Was 13/8 the night before, opened at 5/2 and hit 3/1 before starting at 11/4. Should have left alone, but couldn’t resist a little one. Pearla won as well as a 4/9 shot should (the Shadwell horse - El Megeeth - looked interesting).

Nothing today and we’re off to the Gower in Wales for a short break.

Just the one notebook at York today: See The Fire went in the notebook when she won the Group 2 Middleton at York - 15/5 absolutely smashed this lot, must be down for better things. - but since then she has found the Group 1 level pretty hard going. I was really waiting for an easier assignment, but here she is in the Juddmonte which looks about the toughest race she’s faced so far. Should be a watch, really. As for the race itself, I have no idea - a marginal preference for Delacroix if anything.

I did fancy Lambourn, but it’s a bit off-putting to hear Aidan O’Brien say “he’s only been ticking over and I haven’t trained him hard for this. We’ll decide what next after this.”

Others I’ll be watching and maybe having some fun with:

2:25 Distant Storm
4:10 Fireblade
5:20 Utmost Respect

See The Fire ran pretty well at about the level expected. Please, Andrew, make it a tad easier for her. I thought Ombudsman was a class above, but what’s this overt pacemaker stuff? Isn’t it against the rules? Who gives a damn - not the stewards apparently.

Rule 212 (a)
every horse which runs in a race shall be run on its merits and its subsection (i) the rider of every horse shall take all reasonable and permissible measures throughout the race to ensure that his horse is given a full opportunity to win or of obtaining the best possible place.

Even allowing for him being so keen and pulling so hard early on, it wasn’t much of a run by Desert Storm. A repeat of Ruling Court last year, they reckon. Maybe, but I’ll need to be convinced. Glad I was put off Lambourn and Fireblade was much of a muchness, he was a bit better than it looked since he lost a few places when eased towards the end. He might be out again soon if Mr Cunha has him as ready as he said. Utmost Respect sunk without trace, nothing to note there either. Overall, no damage done since it wasn’t a betting day, although I did take Desert Storm.

Four notebooks today and some bets, at last.

1:50 Royal Fixation: after a decent Class 5 win she ran a cracker in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge at Newmarket - 11/7 ran a heavy odds-on Group 3 winner to a neck with the rest left for dead. - You can never know what might jump out of the woodwork in these 2yo races, but they’ll need to be very good to see her off.

3:00 Leadman: ran a personal best last time at Newbury. - 16/8 finished best of all from the back and just failed. Watch for him if he turns up at York.- He was strong in the finish so the extra furlong should be no bother today. He was 33/1 last evening and is 9/1 now.

3:35 Estrange: went into the notebook at the end of May after her impressive Group 3 win at Haydock - 31/5 very impressive, left the favourite for dead in two strides and won going away. She’s sitting comfortably at the top table - She followed that by winning the Lancashire Oaks where she was tenacious fending off the only serious opponent. Unfortunately, she’s got the odds-on Oaks winner Minnie Hauk to deal with this time and I’d like to see more give in the ground as well. Certainly not a full bet.

5:20 Dance In The Storm: 2lbs better with Mudbir last time she picked up four lengths on him from the time before and was a tad unlucky to boot - 2/8 Mudbir looked to be winning easily until Dance in The Storm finished like an express train to get to a nose behind at the line and a nose in front immediately afterwards. She also took a bump from the winner, but lost out in the stewards room. She was 13/2 last evening, 7/2 at the moment.

Royal Fixation won nicely. My main bet of the day so it was cheers from the get go. Leadman raced at the back and only had one horse to get round to start his challenge, made a meal of it and that was that. Favourite won as expected, but Estrange didn’t show that explosive change of gear when asked, whether it was the ground or the 9lb wfa she had to give I dunno - although according to RPRs she put in a personal best. Only had a small ‘just in case’ bet, though. Dance In The Storm came from a long way back, didn’t get the cleanest of runs, but finished best of all into third. Not bad, but no coconut.

Just the one today:

4:45, Naval Light: went in the notebook after his debut run to second in a Class 2 at Beverley - 24/5 came from last finishing strongly. Will win next time if Class suits. Class didn’t suit next time where he was upped to the Group 2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot where he had a bit of a troubled run, but wasn’t disgraced in eighth. Back to Class 2 last time at Goodwood he was runner-up to Stellar Sunrise who won here yesterday and although it’s the same Class today (he’s in the notebook looking for something easier) that run persuades me to have a nibble, particularly since the extra furlong should suit.

Thought for a while that Naval Light might get there, but he was running on empty towards the finish and just about held on to third. At least it confirms the original thought that I should hold off until he’s aimed a bit lower and I’ll keep him in the book for that.

Day wasn’t a total disaster, I threw a few pennies at Asfoora purely on the basis that the home sprinters aren’t up to much. In fact, you’ve got to wonder what’s happening to our racing. The longer races can’t get entrants because all everyone wants to breed are sprinters. And because hundreds of years of selective breeding has been geared towards the middle distance and more, all they end up with is bunch after bunch of sprinting mediocrity. I despair. Rant over.

All I’ve got at York today are some to watch. Hannon reckons his Rosallion is the best miler in the country, but I’m more interested to see how Audience goes fitted with blinkers for the first time. In the Ebor I wonder what Real Dream is doing there. I think he’s being continually over faced and may be one to note for a more modest race if he runs reasonably ok today. In the Melrose, Sea Of Kings is another being aimed a bit too high, but it will be interested to see how he gets on over a longer distance than he’s ever tried before.

And so to two notebooks elsewhere:

6:45 Windsor - Military Order looks to have the measure of these and his last run was encouraging - 9/8 fought hard to go down by a neck well in front of the rest. Will win next time. Unfortunately he is odds-on and there has to be a worry if the ground’s got any firm in it. No go for me.

3:15 Goodwood - Vronti was unlucky last time to be caught at the death - 6/8 after a fairly sedate pace throughout the race Vronti quickened from two out going well clear only to be nuttted on the line by the favourite who had come from the back in an eye popping run. The pack were out of sight seven lengths and more behind. - she’s up in Class and distance this time, so really ought to be a watch. Will wait to see if the market talks, though.

Aside from Royal Fixation on Thursday there’s been nothing really solid to take (Dance In The Storm was near, but that lost - albeit a bit unlucky) and it’s the same today. Just have to amuse myself and cast a bit of bread upon the waters and see if anything bites.

Well, I cast my bread upon the waters alright, but didn’t get even a flicker of fun. Six bets, didn’t hear any of them even mentioned and missed some good racing whilst searching vainly for them in the pack. Enjoyed the re-runs, though, but still didn’t spot any of mine. Bye, bye York.
:-/

Poor Vronti, annoyingly saw off the favourite only to be nabbed by a debutante. Ran well and fought hard, though. She deserves to get her head in front and she looked at home in the higher Class, so I’ll likely give her another chance.

Nothing today - hurrah!!!

Tuesday 26th August

Saytarr
- 7:10 Lingfield, went into the notebook after a decent run following a long absence - 2/8 finished strongly from the back on his first run for nearly a year. He had been bought back in at the sales in July even though his record was a lowly one and promptly gelded. They must think a bit of him and this was a promising run. - Following that he ran into one at Kempton finishing second a couple of lengths ahead of the rest. He was backed to 2/1f that day so was expected. He’s been a warm order this morning around 6/5 from 2/1. That’s pretty skinny, though.

Saytarr won ok and I suppose the morning price wasn’t so skinny after all given the 5/6 sp. So with that and Slim’s Zanahiyr the usual turgid Tuesday turned out not to be so turgid after all.

Nothing today now that Haazeez has been pulled out.

That’s odd - I see Haazeez seems to be running after all, but he’s been drifting like a barge - now 7/1 from 7/2 according to B365 and others, but Racing Post still showing as a non-runner in the 8:07 Kempton.

ps. Oh silly me. I managed to drop him out of consideration on the RP card
 :-S
. Probably right given the drift - I’ll probably leave alone unless the market turns round.

Well, that was a right bugger up. First of all thought Haazeez had been pulled and then found he was actually running, but had drifted like a barge. Then he goes and wins without me at 9/1 since I don’t usually back drifters.

Two notebooks today:

7:00 Newbury: Moutai - 23/7 back at a mile after not lasting out over 1m2f he ran in the lead until headed two out, rallied well and went down in the end by a neck. - He drops to 7f today and I hope the rain has eased the going a bit since Ed Walker reckons that’s what he needs. It’s still up as good to firm, but the earlier races will be more informative. No market move as yet and need to see some really.

6:25 Newbury: North View - 13/8 on the AW he was held up on first try over a mile and finished very strongly from towards the back to snatch third. They’ll be sure of him over the distance next time. - Back on turf this time with Buick aboard he should be in the mix, but it won’t be a walk in the park. 7/2 at the moment from 6/1.

Poor runs from both. Moutai just never featured, North View blew the start.

Three today, but not of full bet status. Also got the softened ground in the mix .

3:50 Sandown, Man Of La Mancha: 6/8 - After winning with much promise at Windsor, Man Of The Mancha was thwarted at Nottingham when favourite being short of room and then barged about. Then upped to Class 3 (from Class 5) he ran a respectable third, followed that (favourite again) down to Class 4 at Sandown where he got hemmed in, tried for a gap which closed and didn’t get clear until too late. As if all that wasn’t enough, this time at Brighton he lost lengths at the start when Greatrex couldn’t get the hood off, so had to race in last to a fairly strung out field. He did well to come through to fourth in the end. He hasn’t enjoyed the best of luck and if dame fortune looks after him today he ought to be thereabouts. Never raced on soft ground, though.

8:00 Newcastle, Natural Force: 4/8 has been off since winning a Class 3 at Ascot in May 2023 and he shaped well in this Class 5 coming third. Worth another look. He had every right to fade towards the end after such a long absence and as long as the market holds up he ought to be a class above these. He’s trying AW for the first time and is a bit weak in the market at the moment.

5:43 Salisbury, Pilu: 2/8 this was Roger Teal’s first 2yo runner of the season and he couldn’t have been expecting such a strong performance to win at 28/1. He said before the race"Pilo is my first 2yo runner of the year. We like him but he hasn't been particularly quick out of the gate at home which would put him at a disadvantage compared with a few that have had a run and shown ability. It's his first day at school and I expect him to improve for the run, but he could be picking up a few on the way to the line." It was a helluva performance for one apparently unexpected and he’s not going to be easy to beat this time, although there are a good few new kids on the block to face. Strong 11/8 favourite at the moment from 5/2 early.

Nice day yesterday, Pilu made all for an untroubled win and there’s more to come from her, I think. Dame fortune gave Man Of La Mancha a break and he won quite comfortably. Night Force ran ok, but had nothing in the last furlongs. Will watch again.

Couple of notebooks today:

1:30 Beverley, Crown Of Oaks: 12/4 all the time looked like the best horse in the race, but couldn’t get a clear run in the straight and took a few strides to regain balance. Doubtful if he would have won, but worth another look. 26/5 hot favourite and disappointing, as are most Haggas runners at the moment (he’s only had 3 wins from the last 45 or so runners). Wait until he’s back on song to watch again. Odds-on for both those over 1m, he was gelded and then won over 1m2f on his handicap debut after not getting the clearest of runs. He’s up 6lbs for that.

3:00 Sandown, Dangerman: going for a Sandown hat trick with last one being an impressive personal best - 7/8 just a Class 4, but Dangerman looked quite impressive and saw them off without any bother. - This one’s a Class 2, though, so it won’t be easy meat this time and he’s up 9lbs.

Crown Of Oaks was a non-runner. Dangerman ran well, took it easy when the favourite steamed past and lost second.

Nothing today.

Nothing today, but I do have a note for a Wathnan 2yo called Lunar Melody who is making her debut in the 2:30 at Carlisle. It just says “watch”, no idea why. I keep thinking I can rely on an ever creaking memory - real triumph of hope over experience that’d be.

Not long to wait - youtu.be/49tylm5BPic?si=VEHvXDjVwK14TNkE
