I'm told by someone I've likely got a software problem with my laptop. Just as I typed the 'e' in "I've", the e shot back and stuck itself after the 'I' in I'm - and it also hangs a couple of times in quick succession every now and then. What I have is a recon Samsung laptop with Windows XP (I loathed Windows 7 and dumped it). I only really want to play on the Internet and do emails, I'm not using it for anything else right now.

Yesterday at Lingfield I saw this young chap using a Samsung Netbook. What a cute little job that is! A third the size less, powered by a SIM card and with not really any need for a Dongle, either.

Has anyone used these, and can they tell me if the £200 he says he paid for his good value? I paid over that for the monkey I've got now, and will probably have to pay more to get the blighter fixed. Any good/bad reviews welcomed.

I had an HP netbook. Useless. Screen cracked when i breathed on it and would cost £200 to repair. it was junk anyway. Horribly slow. Samsung is much the same i would imagine

Has to be an Ipad at £400. Most i know who have them find they barely use their laptops now. Getting one soon enough myself. Have tried and they are quite superb

Got an ipad in August-wife had got decent laptop a few months previously.Laptop never gets used-everyone loves the ipad.
The 7 year old has found plenty to do on it -during the week we played monopoly which was a good laugh. The 19 month old asks for the pad on a regular basis and there is a load of stuff we watch on YouTube.

Oh, blimey, even more modern! Thanks, Clivex - thing is, aren't iPads teeny-weeny things about the size of a Blackberry? I'd still like to be able to SEE racing replays on them!

Omigod - it's terrifying! Trouble is, it's got far, far more than I'll ever use it for - like all those knobs and buttons in cars these days, when I really don't want to know what the climate is like on the back seat or what the time is in Timbuctoo. It'd frighten me to death, although it looks an astounding piece of evolution - like electricity to candle power!

All that said, I might have a play on one later on! I wouldn't mind learning how to do do stuff with pix and I am a bit stuck in a time warp on ye olde lappetoppe. Thanks for the info, guys 'n' gals - it's good to know that this isn't an innovation too far, which no-one really uses or likes.

Hell's teeth - the Archos is a "highly desirable android"... fine, but will it make and serve dinner and pour cocktails?

Th ipad comes out way top in most surveys on tablets though. Its incredibly easy to use krizon. I wouldnt hesitate and being apple its extremely well made

I know you're a monster Apple fan, Clivex - friends who don't have Apples say they are to be envied, although they'll set a new challenge as not at all like 'ordinary' Macs, I believe. I will try to have a go on some new appliances this year - there's no excuse for not being au fait with the latest innovations just because you're 95. This laptop is really so bloody annoying, and whoever dissed AOL's email service wasn't wrong, either! (And since the mouse died... aaargghh!) It's all right if you don't weaken, isn't it?

That sounds like a winner, DVDS. It's taken me a coon's age to get from my old Nokia mobile to the newer one, where I still can't even text properly, but I really do like the look of these newer thingies. I just don't want to overwhelm my tiny brain with more than it can handle - I have no natural intuition about machines of any sort - but I would like to upgrade my knowledge a bit. (Damn laptop just hung on the third paragraph and again on this sentence!)

(For those of a nervous disposition, "a coon's age" refers to raccoons, as it's an Americanism which I quite like.)

iPads are intuitive - I have one for work and I also have the top of the range (something ridiculous like €2,000 off the shelf) Sony Vaio laptop. I think I've picked it up once in the past two months...the iPad does everything most of the time.

I do have a Mac Book Pro too which is not quite so easy to use but once you find your way around it is ok to use.

Tablets are generally good for consuming content. If you are creating content (even if you just type a lot) then a hardware keyboard will still be appreciated. Without wanting to recommend something without having used it myself, I would be having a good look at Google Chromebooks.

Uhhhh... wot's a 'hardware keyboard', Bets? (You can now see the level of knowledge you're dealing with!) Is that a separate board which you can plug into the tablet/netbook if you prefer them? I like keyboards with concave keys - I can't stand the dead flat ones as they really aren't as good for touch typists like me - okay for 'hunt and peck' or two-finger tappers, but they don't provide the definition of feel that the curved tops do. I imagine that's going to see me hate these dead flat offerings... !

I just meant as opposed to having nothing but a touchscreen (software) keyboard that a tablet has. Basically a traditional laptop (if you are thinking of adding a hardware keyboard to a tablet, then you should really just buy a laptop).

Has anyone tried touch typing on an iPad?

I only really want to play on the Internet and do emails, I'm not using it for anything else right now.

Just buy an iPad. Seriously. It was created for you.

There's a new one out in a couple of months, at which point the current one (which will be perfect for you) should drop nicely in price.

Oh, thanks, Bets - shows how much I know! Gareth - who makes the iPad, is it Macintosh? That sounds like a nice option. I'll put up with this crappy lump until then, even though the regular hanging and jumping is really getting on my wotsits!

Gareth, I know one of Krizon's key requirements is watching racing replays. Are you aware of any issues watching ATR or RUK on the iPad? Neither are flash dependent?
