Netbook versus Craptop

That sounds like a winner, DVDS. It's taken me a coon's age to get from my old Nokia mobile to the newer one, where I still can't even text properly, but I really do like the look of these newer thingies. I just don't want to overwhelm my tiny brain with more than it can handle - I have no natural intuition about machines of any sort - but I would like to upgrade my knowledge a bit. (Damn laptop just hung on the third paragraph and again on this sentence!)

(For those of a nervous disposition, "a coon's age" refers to raccoons, as it's an Americanism which I quite like.)

Careful Krizon, that might seem racist over here and you might get banned for 8 weeks, even longer if you have any Merseyside relatives!!!

Oh and by the way, IPad will take over your life....they are fantastic and I never use my laptop anymore except for updating the IPad with new software

Ooh, good point, Bets - I love to scull through racing replays, so could I do that on an iPad (if I get one) or a Netbook??

I'm not really a technophobe, more a technotwit - this morning, my landline had been cut off by Virgin, who partially managed to follow my request to not turn off all their services today - at least I've got tv and b/b. I had to use my new mobile to inquire about why I had no landline service and found I couldn't remember how to switch it on or off, let alone keep unlocking the blasted keypad, which seems to autolock after every call! I used a neighbour's handset to phone-a-friend and plead for help. Maybe I should just buy an electric typewriter after all...

The consensus is that you can on an iPad if you use something called Skyfire. You certainly can on a netbook/chromebook/laptop.

Typing is harder on a tablet than those three, but Miesque has kindly confirmed you can touch-type with long nails :)

Thanks, Bets - that's extremely useful! I can hear Miesque click-click-clicking as we speak! I rather think it's more likely I'll look at a Netbook, or whatever variations there are on that. One techno-step at a time! The forum's just brill for this sort of thing, as you get so many people using different products, so they can give a nice wide overview of how they perform.

I'm sure there's an Apple store near enough to you. Pop in and spend 10 mins playing with an iPad. Then think about the joys of anti-virus software, constant operating system updates, slowdowns, crashes and arcane installation processes that you'll still have to put up with if you get a netbook.

Then realise you can have none of that and a proper keyboard on the Chromebook

Like Gareth says, try a few out first.

Precisely.

Dont go for a cheap option Krizon. It simply isnt worth a small saving.

But it is a good point about keyboards if you are writing a lot.
